The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ‘Predict-Observe-Explain’ (POE) activities which is carried out with the help of the POE method worksheets on ‘States of Matter’ in the ninth-grade chemistry course curriculum, on students’ metacognitive awareness. The focus group interview held in this study was conducted with eight students selected from the experimental group on a voluntary basis. Twelve questions were asked to the students. This research is a mixed-method study. While the quantitative part of the research was carried out using the pretest and posttest model with the control group, the qualitative part was conducted with the focus group interview technique. A focus group discussion was held to obtain the opinions of the experimental group students on the subjects of Gases and States of Matter taught with worksheets prepared with POE support. The findings obtained as a result of these interviews and the study of student worksheets show that students find POE-supported worksheets fun and they increase their interest and curiosity towards the chemistry class. Keywords: POE, high school students, states of matters, worksheets.
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Internet addiction and to evaluate the associated factors and critical thinking disposition among high school students. The students from different high schools constituted sample group which was determined by simple random sampling of probability sampling method. The main objective of this research is to investigate Internet addiction and critical thinking disposition in terms of various variables. In addition, the relationships between Internet addiction and critical thinking disposition have been explored. Descriptive survey model out of scanning models was used in the research. 204 high school students were participated in the study, Young’s Internet Addiction Scale, Critical Thinking Tendency Scale and sociodemographic questionnaire are applied to the students, the groups were classified as Internet addiction, risky Internet usage and average Internet usage according to the Internet addiction test. Thus, the groups were compared with each other with respect to sociodemographic factors via statistical analysis. Keywords: Internet addiction, critical thinking, high school students.
The current study, designed as a relationalresearch, aims to investigate the views of teachers on private courses and their efficacy levels, affecting these views. Therefore, the case was evaluated from teachers' point of views. 1065 teachers working at different secondary schools in Ankara participated in the study. Data for the present study were collected through Teachers'Views on Private Courses Scale and Ohio Teachers' Efficacy Scale. For the analysis of the data, Independent Samples t Test was utilized to examine the effect of teachers' years of experience, type of the school they work and their background education on theiropinions about private courses and their efficacy levels. Results showthat teachers have a positive standpoint towardsprivate courses. Accordingly, they think that private courses have fewer numbers of students in a classroom setting where students are of the same level. They also claim that private courses corroborate knowledge obtained at school;thus, subjects are learnt better. All these factors are believed to increase academic achievement. Teachers' efficacy levels are also found out to be relatively high. Moreover, it is seen that the more experience teachers have in their profession, the more efficacious they perceive themselves.
The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers' science expectations on learning science after they completed introductory Context-Based teaching. The sampling of the study consisted of 21 pre-service teachers studying at Hacettepe University, Faculty of Education. This is a two-dimensional research study where qualitative and quantitative research methods are used together. The scores obtained by participating groups from the “Science Expectations Questionnaire”. Additionally, pre-service teachers' interviews are given as evidences. As a result of the evaluation of pre-service teachers' the expectations about learning science on independence, coherence, concept, reality link, math link, and effort dimensions, it is thought that there will be important outcomes in terms of improvement of the quality of teacher training at the university and that there will be an important contribution to literature in this sense.
