The effects of photoperiod on the development of in vitro grown plantlets of yam (Dioscorea alata L.), were investigated. Plantlets were transplanted into pots, acclimatizated until they reached vegetative stages V 1 (3 leaves) or V 2 (8 leaves), and then grown under 12-h or 16-h photoperiod. The formation and development of underground tubers was only induced under 12-h photoperiod. Tuber initiation was not related to the initial vegetative stage of plants, and the tubers were visible at about 18 -24 d. On the contrary, a 16-h photoperiod inhibited tuber formation and stimulated vine and leaf growth. The total dry matter production and the number of leaves per plant of V 1 stage plants were 50 and 30 % lower respectively, after 44 d under 12-h compared to 16-h photoperiod. These parameters were not influenced by photoperiod in V 2 stage plants. Consequently, the effect of 12-h photoperiod on dry matter of V 1 plants was attributed to a source limitation related to the early initiation of tuberization. The transfer of plants grown under 12-h to 16-h photoperiod stopped tuber growth and starch accumulation. On the other hand, it stimulated the shoots and the roots to grow.
SUMMARY Effect of planting date on growth and development of yam (Dioscorea alata L.) plantlets from in vitro culture. D. alata plantlets from in vitro culture were planted at dates staggered between September and April and grown under irrigation conditions. Successive plantings did not initially differ in plantlet morphology, but further growth of both aerial parts (architecture and maximum size) and underground parts made them quite different from each other after a few months. Tuber yields of the October or December plantings were dramatically reduced compared to those of the January, March or April plantings. The duration of the leafy phase and of tuber dormancy also varied widely among plantings, so that tuber sprouting in all cases occurred around April, as observed in normal cultivation. These results were very close to those obtained from staggered plantings of more or less obviously aged D. alata tubers. Since they could not in this case be due to the mother-tuber, it was concluded that problems met when trying to cultivate the species out-of-season must mostly be related to its sensitivity to environmental conditions (thermo-photoperiodism).
SUMMARY Growth and development of yam bean Pachyrhizus erosus Urban. 1.-Effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) and chlorocholine chloride (CCC) under short-day conditions. The effects of gibberellic acid at 50 and 200 p.p.m. (GA 50 and GA 200) and chlorocholine chloride 1 000 and 5 000 (CCC 1 000 and CCC 5 000) were investigated in the field on growth, flowering and tuberization of yam bean, a tropical legume producing grain and tubers. GA enhanced the development of the aerial parts and tubers but inhibited flowering. CCC favoured flowering and pod formation but reduced tuber development. Only GA 50 plants presented dry matter accumulation per plant higher than that obtained with other treatments. Analysis of matter distribution revealed that the o 7o share allocated to aerial parts (leaves and stems) and to storage organs (pods and tubers) was almost constant. The effects of growth substances essentially resulted in a different distribution of dry matter between the two storage organs, pods and tubers.
RÉSUMÉLes effets de l'acide gibbérellique (GA3)
