Introdução: Diversos fatores influenciam a atividade motora intestinal, alterando seu hábito regular. A constipação é considerada um sintoma, e seu tratamento é de suma importância para o indivíduo hospitalizado. Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência de constipação em pacientes hospitalizados e seus fatores de risco. Métodos: Foram entrevistados 36 indivíduos de ambos os gêneros, com idade superior a 18 anos em um hospital de cardiologia. Aplicaram-se dois questionários (Escala de Avaliação de Constipação (CAS) e a Escala de Fezes de Bristol), nas primeiras 24 horas de internação hospitalar e após 72 h para avaliar o hábito intestinal. Resultados: A amostra foi composta por 36 indivíduos (64% adultos e 66% do gênero masculino). De acordo com os critérios de diagnóstico do CAS houve modificação no habito intestinal após 72 horas de internação (p = 0,001). De acordo com a escala de fezes de Bristol identificou-se que a população idosa tornou-se mais constipada após a internação (p = 0,045). Conclusão: A população apresentou durante o período de internação modificação do hábito intestinal levando a constipação.Palavras-chave: constipação intestinal, hospitalização, ceco, fezes.
