Abstract— Justicieae is one of the largest tribes of Acanthaceae, composed of 2000 species distributed in 100 genera, with highest diversity in the neotropical region. Palynological studies containing several representatives of the tribe are rare, specially species
from Northeastern Brazil. The present study aims to differentiate species and evaluate palynological characters in the light of a phylogenetic hypothesis of Justicieae. Eighteen species belonging to six genera were analyzed. Pollen grains were acetolyzed, measured and photographed under light
microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pollen grains are medium to very large in size, isopolar, planaperturate, subprolate, prolate to prolate spheroidal, and two-colporate to three-colporate, or with six pseudocolpi. The exine ornamentation is microreticulate to reticulate
with areolae between the apertures in most species. Some species present a cavea in the mesocolpium. The pollen morphology of Justicia chamaedryoides, J. congrua, J. glaziovii, J. thunbergioides, J. sphaerosperma, Pseuderanthemum congestum, and P. modestum are hereby described
for the first time. A new combination is also proposed, Thyrsacanthus angustissimus.
Abstract—Justicia rubrobracteata, a new species from northeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to J. aequilabris due to its shrubby habit, and terminal and axillary spicate inflorescences with
red flowers. However, J. rubrobracteata is differentiated mainly by the shape and color of its bracts and bracteoles as well as an orangish macula in the corolla, and a torulose capsule. In addition, J. rubrobracteata is only known from northeastern Brazil, from
the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, while J. aequilabris is widely distributed in Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. A table with the main morphological characters of both species is included, as well as photographs, a key to species of Justicia for the states of
Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil, a distribution map of both species, and conservation data for the new species.
This study presents a taxonomic survey of the species of Acanthaceae in the Cuiabá lowlands, an area encompassing several habitats, from rock outcrops in Chapada dos Guiamarães to the periodically flooded forest areas in the Pantanal. Herbarium collections were analyzed and 13 field expeditions were carried out to visit different phytophysiognomies and ecosystems. The family is represented by 31 species and 12 genera, the most diverse being Justicia (10 species) and Ruellia (eight species). Additionally, Dicliptera squarrosa, Dyschoriste schottiana, Ruellia blechum, R. jussieuoides, and R. trachyphylla are newly recorded in the state of Mato Grosso. The number of species is higher if compared with other taxonomic studies of Acanthaceae in Central-Western Brazil. Despite the area being overlooked by the botanical community, we expect our results will instigate further taxonomic studies in the area. This study provides an identification key, short descriptions, comments on taxonomy and distribution, and photographs.
