The purpose of this article is to articulate how the Roy adaptation model has been extended as a conceptual framework to meet changing global needs. Nursing's social mandate is described within the significant global changes of this century. The required synthesis of the individual and common good is predicated within the thinking of the model. Changes are described with specific examples of groups from the family to global society levels. The implications of this work for knowledge development are identified.
In this paper, the philosophical assumptions for theorizing and research based on the Roy adaptation model of nursing are explicated. The common philosophical heritage of nursing and the author's perspective of the discipline are examined. Some highlights of the developments of the Roy adaptation model are reviewed. Eight assumptions about the adapting person in society are articulated, derived from the theorist's nursing heritage, perspective of the discipline, and specific life values. The philosophical assumptions are categorized by the general principles of humanism and veritivity, a term coined to connote the richness of rootedness in an absolute truth. This principle is compared to rationalism and relativism as two other world views. The author describes how veritivity as a world view leads to the values of conviction, commitment, and caring based on the value of the individual in society in the context of the purposefulness of all of human existence.Nursing as a practice disipline has a strong philosophical heritage that is relevant to both the social mandate and the scholarly development of the discipline. Given today's crucial ethical issues and the rapid development of nursing theory and research, nurse theorists are compelled to explicate the basic assumptions of their work. The assumptions of any given conceptual model are both philosophic and scientific. The articulation of these assumptions can contribute greatly to both the focus and development of the scheme of substantive knowledge inherent in the model. The scientific assumptions of the Roy adaptation model of nursing have received more attention in the literature
Balance was an integral component to the experience of integration, between structure and flexibility, fear and hope, conflict and acceptance, diabetes and life. Conceptualizations identified with this investigation extend understanding of theories of integration and lifestyle change and invite the development and testing of nursing interventions.
