Segundo a pesquisa Origem Destino 2017 do Metrô de São Paulo, os deslocamentos a pé correspondem a 32% das viagens feitas na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo; são contabilizados os deslocamentos acima de 500 m, a menos quando o motivo é trabalho ou escola, em que se registra qualquer distância. Estima-se, assim, que esse número, na verdade seja ainda maior, se contabilizados também os deslocamentos curtos por outros motivos, que ocorrem especialmente para acessar o transporte público e dele alcançar o destino final. Com o Plano Diretor Estratégico de 2014, buscou-se incentivar a mobilidade ativa no município de São Paulo, desenvolvendo especialmente zonas ao redor de estações de transporte de massa, chamadas de Zonas de Estruturação Urbana (ZEUs), onde tendem a ocorrer esses deslocamentos. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a dinâmica da mobilidade na região intitulada ZEU Butantã, focando especialmente na caminhabilidade, e propor soluções que incentivem e tornem mais adequado esse modo de transporte no local, assegurando uma boa integração com outros modos, em um contexto de promoção da mobilidade urbana sustentável. Para esse fim, foi primeiramente realizada uma revisão bibliográfica, buscando-se identificar os parâmetros que influenciam a caminhabilidade em uma área e métodos para verificá-los, para então produzir um diagnóstico da região, utilizando-se dados secundários e bases digitais georreferenciadas. Na etapa de projeto, utilizou-se revisão bibliográfica específica complementar, focada em iniciativas já implementadas com sucesso em outros locais. Como resultado do diagnóstico, foram elencados cinco fatores para orientar estratégias de melhoria em mobilidade a pé: atratividade para pedestres; interação entre pedestres e ciclistas; infraestrutura da calçada; qualidade e integração dos modos de transporte; e segurança viária no nível do pedestre. Finalmente, como resultado propositivo, foram elaboradas diretrizes para o desenvolvimento do projeto preliminar, focando na compatibilização das soluções, em um processo iterativo. Nessa fase de projeto, com base nos cinco fatores identificados no diagnóstico, as soluções abrangeram aspectos como iluminação pública, realocação de ciclofaixas, alargamentos e implementação de rampas de acessibilidade em calçadas, implantação de garagem subterrânea e alterações na sinalização de cruzamentos. Consolidando o trabalho, uma análise das soluções propostas sob a ótica dos mesmos parâmetros usados no diagnóstico indicou melhora no nível de caminhabilidade na região, indicando assim o potencial da ZEU Butantã para ser caminhável e atender às necessidades atuais e futuras dos pedestres.
