The study assessed the linkages that exit among research agencies in transfer of technology for continuous agricultural production in South East Nigeria. Four research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted ex-post-facto research design. The population for the study was 2,276 comprised of 112 agricultural extension agents, 393 officers of research institutes and 1,771 registered contact farmers. The sample for the study was 486 made up of 112 extension agents, 197 officers and 177 farmers. A sixty seven (67) structured questionnaire items developed from related literature reviewed and face validated by three experts was used for data collection. The reliability of the questionnaire items was determined using Cronbach Alpha method and a coefficient of 0.80 was obtained. Three research assistants helped to distribute and retrieve the copies of the questionnaire which were analyzed using mean, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools. The findings of the study revealed 12 mechanisms adopted by each agency for agricultural technology transfer. 09 delivery channels; 36 constraints and 13 strategies for effective technology transfer. It was therefore recommended that the agencies should formulate and pursue the same objective; government to formulate policies for uniform implementation of technology transfer, establish and equip research institutes with infrastructural facilities, provide adequate training and retrain extension agents and farmers to enhance technology transfer linkages using the identified strategies.
The study was conducted to determine the perception of food crops farmers on adoption of selected post-harvest technologies in Rivers State, Nigeria. A multistage snow-ball, procedure was used to sample 135 selected food crops farmers in the State. A well, structured questionnaire was used to obtain information from the respondents using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The result revealed that, majority (85.9%) of the respondents, were females while 84.4% of the respondents were married. The mean age of the respondent was 41.0 years and highly experienced in food crops production with mean of 15.9 years experience. Majority of the respondents (77%) attended primary school. The level of food crops farmers' perception on adoption of post-harvest technologies packages was positive, majority (78.1%) of the respondents agreed with the positive statements on adoption of post-harvest technologies, implying the possibility of high level of adoption of post-harvest technologies. The perception of the food crops farmers also had influence on adoption level of the selected post-harvest technologies packages with (P < 0.05). The study concluded that food crops farmers had positive perception of post-harvest technologies in the study area and the study therefore, recommends that Extension should make the technologies available along with training.
This study was set to determine the strategies for enhancing the performance of secondary school students in agricultural science for food security in Ebonyi State. A survey research design was adopted with a population of 53 respondents (14 male and 39 female agricultural science teachers) sampled purposively from 48 secondary schools in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The instrument for data collection was a structured 4-point weighted 21-item questionnaire developed by the researcher sectioned A and B with response options of Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (DA) and Strongly Disagree (SD) after intensive literature review and the numerical values of 4, 3, 2 & 1 was assigned to the instrument respectively. The instrument was validated by three research experts while the reliability index of 0.77 was established using Cronbach Alpha reliability estimate. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the two research questions while t-test was used to test the two null hypotheses at .05 level of significance and appropriate degree of freedom. Some of the findings among others include that teachers can enhance the performance of secondary school students in agricultural science for food security in Ebonyi State. It was therefore recommended that facilities should be made available for proper training of secondary school students for productivity on graduation and as well for food security in Ebonyi State.
The study determined the capacity building needs of farmers in soil erosion management for increase food production and security in Enugu State. Four research questions guided the study while four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted survey research design. The population for the study was 131 respondents made up of 96 registered farmers and 35 extension workers. The entire population was used because of the manageable size. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Three experts validated the instrument while it was tested for reliability using cronbach‟s alpha method. Alpha value of 0.72 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the researchquestions, while the t test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that out that tillage operation, planting of cover crops, constructing terracing and revegetationwere needed in soil erosion management for increase production in Enugu State. The tested hypotheses shows that there was no significant difference in the mean responses of farmers and extension workers in tillage, cover cropping, terracing and revegetation for soil erosion management.Based on these findings, it was recommendedAgricultural extension agents shouldtrain farmers on how to make ridges and create furrows, construct terrace, contruct the diversion channel to take away runoff water from the field and replant trees in the area where vegetation had been destroyed.
The main purpose of this study was to determine the influence of urbanization in teaching and learning of agriculture in Ebonyi State. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population was 397 which comprised 261 teachers of agricultural science in Ebonyi State and 136 senior secondary three students from 5 public secondary school in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State. No sampling was done due to the manageable size of the population. The instrument used for data collection was a 17 item questionnaire which was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha which yielded reliability index of 0.85 indicating that the instrument was suitable for data collection. The questionnaire was distributed by the researcher and three trained research assistants. Out of 397 copies distributed 383 were properly filled and returned representing 96.47 percent return rate. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions and t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses. Based on the data analysis, it was found that urbanization affects the quality of teachers in rural schools due to rural urban migration, increases the rate of agricultural teacher‟s turnover in teaching and reduces government attention to agricultural science teaching facilities in urban areas. Recommendations were made among, others that Government should be make teaching of skill acquisition in urban settlement to be attractive to the students and teachers should make instruction facilities to meet the needed skills and contemporary issues in urban settlement to the students.
