This chapter explores the development and current trends in heritage tourism, identifying key stakeholders and reflecting on the work of the United Nations World Tourism Organization as a body set up to protect international cultural heritage. The chapter debates the value of World Heritage status, management methods used to manage and protect historic environments and challenges faced by allowing public access, before finally looking at the interpretation and presentation of heritage as a tourism commodity.
