Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de níveis de sombreamento artificial (0%, 30%, 50% e 70%) nas taxas de acúmulo de matéria seca de quatro gramíneas (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. humidicola cv. Quicuio-da-amazônia, Panicum maximum cv. Massai e Paspalum notatum cv. Pensacola) e três leguminosas forrageiras (Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte, A. pintoi BRA-031143 e Pueraria phaseoloides), em Rio Branco, Acre. No período de novembro de 1999 a abril de 2001, foram realizados nove cortes para medição das taxas de acúmulo de matéria seca. Os capins marandu e massai tiveram o melhor desempenho entre as gramíneas, aliando boa tolerância ao sombreamento e alta capacidade produtiva, constituindo opções importantes na composição de sistemas silvipastoris em áreas com solos bem drenados. O quicuio-da-amazônia apresentou menor tolerância ao sombreamento, podendo ser usado em sistemas silvipastoris com baixa densidade arbórea, em áreas com chuvas bem distribuídas ou com solos mal drenados. O capim-pensacola apresentou alta tolerância ao sombreamento, mas baixa capacidade produtiva, não sendo recomendado para a região. O Arachis pintoi cv. Growth of tropical forage grasses and legumes under shadeAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of levels of artificial shade (0%, 30%, 50% and 70%) on dry matter accumulation rates of four tropical forage grasses (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. humidicola cv. Quicuio-da-amazônia, Panicum maximum cv. Massai and Paspalum notatum cv. Pensacola) and three forage legumes (Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte, A. pintoi BRA-031143 and Pueraria phaseoloides) in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. To measure dry matter accumulation rates, nine cuts were performed between November 1999 and April 2001. The grasses Marandu and Massai had the best performance, with good shade tolerance and productivity, and were good options for silvopastoral systems in areas with well-drained soils. The quicuio-daamazônia grass showed lower shade tolerance, and was recommended only for low tree density silvopastoral systems in areas with good rainfall distribution or with poorly drained soils. The Pensacola grass showed high shade tolerance but it is not recommended for silvopastoral systems in the Western Amazon region because of its low yield capacity. Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte showed higher yield capacity and shade tolerance than the other legumes.

RESUMO -O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a velocidade de estabelecimento de acessos de amendoim forrageiro (Arachis repens e Arachis pintoi), visando selecionar materiais adaptados aos sistemas intensivos de produção pecuária do Acre. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de dois acessos de A. repens, sete acessos e duas cultivares de Arachis pintoi identificados como promissores para as condições ambientais de Rio Branco, Acre. Foi adotado como testemunha A. pintoi cv. Amarillo. Os acessos Ap 65, Ap 39 e Ar 10, com desempenho semelhante às cultivares Amarillo e Belmonte, destacaram-se por apresentar excelente velocidade de estabelecimento, com índice de sobrevivência das mudas e cobertura do solo superiores a 80% e comprimento dos estolões acima de 85 cm, respectivamente, aos 50, 70 e 120 dias após o plantio. Estes genótipos apresentaram produtividade de matéria seca (MS) superior a 2.300 kg/ha, taxas de acúmulo de MS iguais ou superiores a 20 kg/ha/dia e teor de proteína bruta variando entre 17,9 e 21,7%, no final do período de estabelecimento. Entre os quatro grupos heteróticos, o formado pelo acesso Ap 39 destacou-se dos demais, por apresentar valores médios a altos para todas as características avaliadas, de acordo com a análise de agrupamento realizada pelo Método de Otimização de Tocher, com base na distância generalizada de Mahalanobis. Para que os materiais promissores possam ser recomendados para uso nos sistemas intensivos de produção de bovinos no Acre, devem ser desenvolvidos estudos adicionais com relação à: 1) produtividade e qualidade de MS nos períodos chuvoso e seco; 2) ocorrência de pragas e doenças; 3) produção de sementes; 4) adaptação a solos de baixa permeabilidade; 5) compatibilidade com gramíneas forrageiras e espécies arbóreas e arbustivas perenes; 6) produção animal e persistência sob pastejo.Palavras-chave: Amarillo, Arachis pintoi, Arachis repens, Belmonte, diversidade genética, leguminosa Speed of Establishment of Accessions of Forage Peanut in the Western AmazonABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the speed of establishment of accessions of Arachis repens and Arachis pintoi with the purpose of selecting materials capable of producing adequate quantities of high quality forage, according to the requirements of the intensive cattle production systems of Acre. RESUMO -Conduziu-se um estudo em um sistema agrossilvipastoril, constituído por Eucalyptus urophylla e Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia-1, para verificar a hipótese de que existiam outros fatores, além da baixa disponibilidade de luz, interferindo no crescimento normal da gramínea, quatro anos após sua introdução no sistema. O estudo consistiu de um ensaio de adubação NPK a campo, adotando-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com os tratamentos dispostos no arranjo fatorial 2³, com duas doses de nitrogênio (0 e 100 kg/ha de N), fósforo (0 e 70 kg/ha de P 2 O 5 ) e potássio (0 e 100 kg/ha de K 2 O). A gramínea não respondeu ao P nem ao K, embora os teores originais de P e K disponíveis no solo fossem baixos. A adubação nitrogenada dobrou a taxa de acumulação de matéria seca do sub-bosque, mostrando que o crescimento da gramínea estava sendo restringido pela baixa disponibilidade de N no solo. A elevada resposta à adubação nitrogenada mostrou que o sombreamento não era o único fator limitando a produtividade do sub-bosque, e, também, que as plantas estabelecidas do capim-tanzânia não estavam sendo afetadas negativa e significativamente por substâncias alelopáticas produzidas pelo eucalipto.Palavras-chave: alelopatia, nitrogênio, Panicum maximum, sistemas silvipastoris, sombra, sustentabilidadeFactors Limiting the Growth of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia-1 in an Agrosilvopastoral System with Eucalypt, in the Cerrados of Minas Gerais, Brazil ABSTRACT -A study was conducted in an agrosilvopastoral system, constituted by Eucalyptus urophylla and Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia-1, to verify the hypothesis that there were other factors, besides the low light availability, affecting the normal growth of the grass, four years after its introduction in the system. A NPK fertilization field trial was carry out, using the randomized block design, with the treatments in the 2³ factorial outline, with two doses of nitrogen (0 and 100 kg/ha of N), phosphorus (0 and 70 kg/ha of P 2 O 5 ) and potassium (0 and 100 kg/ha of K 2 O). The grass did not respond to P nor K fertilization, in spite of the low original P and K availability in the soil. However, with the application of nitrogen the rate of herbage accumulation was twice superior compared to control, showing that the grass growth was being restricted by the low N availability in the soil. -This study was carried out from October 2002 to December 2003 to evaluate the dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition of a mixed massaigrass (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) and forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Ac 01) pasture, intermittently stocked at three daily herbage allowance levels (9.0, 14.5 and 18.4% live weight).Sward condition was characterized in each grazing cycle in terms of the pre-and post-grazing sward height, forage mass and percentage of bare ground. Botanical composition (grass, legume and weeds) was evaluated before each grazing period. Sward height and forage mass increased linearly with increasing herbage allowance (HA) levels, and higher values were observed during the rainy season. Percentage of bare ground increased primarily at the lowest HA level. Percentage of forage peanut increased throughout the experimental period, primarily in the barest and shortest swards, under the lowest HA level. In the last quarter of 2003 the legume constituted 23.5, 10.6 and 6.4% of the pasture forage mass, respectively, from the lowest to the highest HA level. These results suggest that forage peanut can be successfully associated with massaigrass, as long as the pre-grazing sward height is maintained shorter than 65-70 cm, which will prevent excessive shading to the legume.Key Words: Arachis pintoi, competition, legume, Panicum maximum, persistence, Western Amazon Estratégias de manejo do pastejo para pastos consorciados de capim-massai e amendoim forrageiro. 1. Dinâmica da condição do pasto e da composição botânica RESUMO -Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a dinâmica e a composição botânica de uma pastagem consorciada de capim-massai (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) e amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Ac 01), manejada sob lotação rotacionada em três níveis de oferta diária de forragem (9,0; 14,5 e 18,4% do peso vivo). A condição da pastagem foi caracterizada em cada ciclo de pastejo, em termos de altura, massa de forragem e porcentagem de solo descoberto (pré e pós-pastejo). A composição botânica da pastagem (gramínea, leguminosa e invasoras) foi monitorada antes de cada período de ocupação. Houve aumento linear da altura e da massa de forragem da pastagem com o incremento dos níveis de oferta de forragem (OF), observando-se maiores valores durante o período de máxima precipitação. A porcentagem de solo descoberto, por sua vez, aumentou, principalmente no menor nível de OF. A porcentagem de amendoim forrageiro aumentou progressivamente ao longo do período experimental, sobretudo nas pastagens mantidas com dossel mais baixo e mais aberto, criado com o uso de menores níveis de OF. No último trimestre do período experimental, a leguminosa representou 23,5; 10,6 e 6,4% da massa seca da pastagem, respectivamente, do menor para o maior nível de OF. RESUMO -Conduziu-se este estudo na região dos Cerrados de Minas Gerais, visando avaliar o desempenho de seis gramíneas forrageiras (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. brizantha cv. MG-4, B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça, Melinis minutiflora e Hyparrhenia rufa), consorciadas ou não com a leguminosa Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirão e Eucalyptus sp., em um sistema silvipastoril. As forrageiras foram estabelecidas em parcelas medindo 12 x 10 m, nas entrelinhas do eucalipto, em um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, e avaliadas quanto ao grau de cobertura do solo, % de leguminosa e disponibilidade de matéria seca total no sub-bosque, um ano após o estabelecimento, submetidas a pastejos de curta duração. Após dois ciclos de pastejo, houve redução da proporção da leguminosa no consórcio com todas as gramíneas, sendo mais evidente com as mais agressivas (B. brizantha cv. Marandu e B. decumbens), onde ela quase desapareceu. Entretanto, a presença do estilosantes Mineirão favoreceu a produtividade do sub-bosque, quando consorciado com as demais gramíneas. O melhor desempenho produtivo foi obtido pelas gramíneas B. brizantha cv. Marandu, B. decumbens e P. maximum cv. Ground cover, proportion of the legume and total dry matter availability in the understorey were evaluated one year after the establishment, under short time grazing. After two grazing cycles, there was reduction of the proportion of the legume in the mixture with all grasses, notably with the more aggressive ones ( B. brizantha cv. Marandu and B. decumbens), where it practically disappeared. With the other grasses, however, the presence of the legume favored the productivity of the understorey. The grasses with the best productive performance were B. brizantha cv. Marandu, B. decumbens and P. maximum cv. RESUMO -Foi estudado o efeito de árvores isoladas de baginha (Stryphnodendron guianense (Aubl.) Benth.) sobre alguns aspectos do ecossistema de pastagens cultivadas na Amazônia Ocidental. Avaliaram-se, sob a copa das árvores e na área adjacente a pleno sol, a fertilidade do solo, a serapilheira, o teor de água no solo, a transmissão de luz ao pasto, a disponibilidade de forragem e as composições química e morfológica das gramíneas (mistura de Brachiaria decumbens e B. brizantha cv. Marandu). As árvores de baginha tiveram efeito positivo sobre a fertilidade do solo, notadamente com relação ao conteúdo de matéria orgânica e de nitrogênio, sendo a deposição de grande quantidade de serapilheira, rica em nitrogênio, a principal contribuição. A forragem sombreada apresentou maiores teores de N e K e menores de Ca, na fração folha verde, do que em áreas a pleno sol. As árvores de baginha apresentaram copa pouco densa, permitindo a transmissão de 27% da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa incidente ao meio-dia. A elevada cobertura do solo (superior a 85%) e a boa disponibilidade de forragem sob a copa da baginha, juntamente com outros atributos, confirmam o potencial desta leguminosa para arborização de pastagens e como componente de outras modalidades de sistemas silvipastoris no trópico úmido.Palavras-chave: arborização, Brachiaria, leguminosa, sistemas silvipastoris, sombra, sustentabilidade Baginha Trees (Stryphnodendron guianense (Aubl.) Benth.) in Cultivated PastureEcosystems in the Western Amazon ABSTRACT -The effect of isolated trees of baginha (Stryphnodendron guianense (Aubl.) Benth.) on some aspects of cultivated pasture ecosystems was studied in the Western Amazon of Brazil. Soil fertility, nutrients in the litter, soil water content, light transmission to sward, herbage availability, and chemical and morphological composition of the grasses (mixture of Brachiaria decumbens and B. brizantha cv. Marandu) were assessed under the canopies of baginha trees and in the adjacent open areas. The trees had positive effect on soil fertility, especially with respect to soil organic matter and nitrogen content, with the great deposition of litter rich in nitrogen being the main contribution. The shaded grass leaves were richer in N and K, and poorer in Ca, than the unshaded ones. The canopies of the baginha trees presented low density, allowing the transmission of 27% of the incoming photosynthetically active radiation at noon. The high ground cover (superior to 85%) and good herbage availability under the canopies of baginha trees, in addition to other attributes, confirms the potential of this legume as shade tree for pastures and as component of other kinds of silvopastoral systems in the humid tropics. . -This study was carried out to evaluate the productivity and utilization efficiency of a mixed marandugrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Mandobi) and tropical kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides) pasture, rotationally stocked at four daily forage allowance levels (6.6, 10.3, 14.3 and 17.9% of live weight), in order to define sward management targets for these mixtures. In each stocking cycle, dry matter (DM) accumulation rates, defoliation intensity (%), grazing depth (%) and grazed horizon (cm) were evaluated. Sward targets were defined according to the sward condition that best conciliated the grass-legume balance and the equilibrium between forage production and utilization. Pastures submitted to higher forage allowance levels showed higher productivity, but were less efficiently utilized. It was not possible to establish sward management targets for marandugrass-tropical kudzu pastures. For marandugrass-forage peanut pastures the best sward state was set with forage allowance of 10.3% of live weight. Under rotational stocking, the following sward targets were suggested for these pastures in the Western Amazon: pre-grazing height of 30-35 cm (June to September) or 45-50 cm (October to May) and post-grazing sward height of 20-25 cm (June to September) or 25-30 cm (October to May).

-This study was carried out to evaluate the dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition of a mixed pasture of marandugrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Mandobi) and tropical kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides), rotationally stocked at four daily forage allowance levels (6.6, 10.3, 14.3 and 17.9% of live weight). Sward condition was characterized in each stocking cycle by measuring pre-and post-grazing sward height, forage mass and percentage of bare ground. Botanical composition (grass, forage peanut, tropical kudzu and weeds) was evaluated before each stocking period. Swards under smaller forage allowances presented lower height, forage mass and ground cover.This condition favored the growth of forage peanut, which constituted 21.1, 15.2, 8.4 and 3.8% of forage mass in the last quarter of the experimental period, from the lowest to the highest forage allowance, respectively. Tropical kudzu was sensitive to all forage allowance levels and its percentage in the botanical composition was strongly reduced along the experimental period, especially during the dry season (July to September). Forage peanut cv. Mandobi and marandugrass form a more balanced mixture when pre-grazing sward height is maintained shorter than 45 cm. Tropical kudzu is intolerant to intensive grazing management systems when associated to marandugrass.
