SUMMARY Transnational companies (TNCs) operating plantations in less developed countries face mounting problems with regard to land and labour. An attractive alternative which they are increasingly taking up is contract farming: a form of agricultural production whereby smallholders are contracted to supply produce to a central processing and marketing agency. When opting out of production, however, TNCs tend also to opt out of basic needs provision. With reference to tobacco production in Sri Lanka, it is argued that contract farming can only contribute to meeting basic needs if the incomes and employment it generates can be distributed with a measure of equality.
The three-dimensional dynamic response of a double articulated offshore loading structure to noncollinear waves and a steady current is studied for various waves and varying current directions. The governing equations of motion are derived by the Lagrange’s method where the wave and current forces are computed by a modified form of the Morison’s equation which takes account for the relative motion of the water particles with respect to the oscillating structure. The resulting highly nonlinear equations are solved by using a block integration method. The computed results predict complex whirling oscillations of the structure to noncollinear waves and current.
