Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, based nanocomposites with different clays structures have been processed by solvent casting and melt crystallisation. Depending on the melting temperature of the polymer, the nanocomposite recrystalises in the electroactive γ or non electroactive α-phase of the polymer. This fact is related to the thermal behaviour of the clay.For montmorillonite clay, the full crystallisation of the electroactive γ-phase occurs for clay contents lower than 0.5 wt%, allowing the nanocomposites to maintain the mechanical properties of the polymer matrix. The electroactivity of the material has been proven by measuring the piezoelectric d 33 response of the material. The obtained value of d 33 is -7 pC/N, lower than in β-PVDF obtained by mechanical stretching, but still among the largest coefficients obtained for polymers. Further, the optical transmittance in the visible range is strongly enhanced with respect to the transmittance of the pure polymer. Finally, it is demonstrated that the nucleation of the γ-phase can be also obtained in other clays, such as in kaolinite and laponite.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, thin films have been processed by spin-coating with controlled thickness, morphology and crystalline phases. The influence of the polymer/solvent mass ratio of the solution, the rotational speed of the spin-coater and the temperature of crystallization of the films on the properties of the material has been investigated. It is shown that high-quality films with controlled thicknesses from 300 nm to 4.5 μm and with a controlled amount of electroactive crystalline phases can be obtained in a single deposition step, which allows tailoring the material characteristics for specific applications.

The main objective of this work is the preparation of decorative zirconium oxynitride, ZrOxNy, thin films by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. Film properties were analyzed as a function of the reactive gas flow and were correlated with the observed structural changes. Measurements showed a systematic decrease in the deposition rate with the increase of the reactive gas flow and revealed three distinct modes: (i) a metallic mode, (ii) a transition mode (subdivided into three zones), and (iii) an oxide mode. The measurements of target potential were also consistent with these changes, revealing a systematic increase from 314to337V. Structural characterization uncovered different behaviors within each of the different zones, with a strong dependence of film texture on the oxygen content. These structural changes were also confirmed by resistivity measurements, whose values ranged from 250to400μΩcm for low gas flows and up to 106μΩcm for the highest flow rates. Color measurements in the films revealed a change from bright yellow at low reactive gas flows to red brownish at intermediate flows and dark blue for the films prepared at the highest flows. Hardness measurements gave higher values for the region where larger grain sizes were found, showing that the grain growth hardening effect is one of the main parameters that can help explain the observed behavior. Also the peak intensity ratio and the residual stress states were found to be important factors for explaining this behavior.
