Le travail du métal distingue deux types d'opérations. La transformation du minerai en métal (métallurgie) et la transformation du métal en outils et objets (forge et bijouterie). Ces deux opérations peuvent ou non être effectuées par les mêmes opérateurs techniques. Au Nord de l'Afrique et au Sahara, les gisements de minerai sont de plusieurs natures. Au sud de l'Amsaga en Mauritanie (Akjoukt), dans le Tell (Ténès) et la Tescha (Mascara) en Algérie, dans la région de l'Ayr au Niger (Teggida-n-Tesemt), des gisements de cuivre sont exploités depuis fort longtemps. Des fouilles archéologiques en Mauritanie (Vanacker 1983) et au Niger (S. Bernus 1983) ont permis de mettre à jour les modes de transformation du minerai et de révéler l'ancienneté de l'exploitation des mines. La présence de zinc et parfois d'étain dans certaines zones d'exploitation du cuivre, comme en Mauritanie, a permis le développement d'une production d'objets en laiton et en bronze. Dans l'Ouest du monde touareg, le cuivre est appelé égher. Les Touaregs de cette région classent deux alliages à base de cuivre, le bronze (cuivre et étain) et le laiton (cuivre et zinc) sous la même appellation : darogh. Le zinc étant plus abondant au Sahara que l'étain, la plupart des alliages en milieu touareg sont en fait du bronze. Ce métal, lorsqu'il est associé à une quantité significative de zinc (20 %) est facile à forger par martelage à froid. En revanche sa température de fusion devient plus élevée et c'est peut-être l'une des raisons pour laquelle très peu d'objets, en milieu touareg, sont réalisés par moulage ou à la cire perdue. Le bronze est couramment employé pour rehausser la décoration d'objets en fer ou en cuir. Ainsi, il est employé dans la décoration du cadenas (tasarflet), (il est aujourd'hui de plus en plus soudé au fer au chalumeau), des fourreaux d'épées ou des couteaux, des selle de chameau d'homme ou de femme. Matière semi-précieuse, il n'est que rarement utilisé dans la confection des bijoux à l'exception notable des étuis à amulettes (tikardiwen). Le cuivre à l'état pur apparaît rarement dans les décorations des bijoux et objets. Les Touaregs de l'Ouest lui préfèrent de beaucoup le bronze.
