An updated version of an earlier waveguide program has been written In the FORTRAN compiler language. The new program Includes the following alterations or additions; (1) An Improved Runge-Kutta routine; (2) A procedure which finds directly the starting solutions at the top of the Ionosphere; (3) Provision for Including up to five charged particles; (U) A method for economically finding approximate waveguide solutions; and modifications for use of the program for ELF wave propagation. A closed, general solution for the reflection coefficient matrix of a sharply bounded, anisotropic, homogeneous ionosphere is presented. A coordinate system used by Budden is introduced that leads to simplified boundary condition equations. In this system the solution for the general case reduces to one similar to that obtained by Crombie for the special case of propagation from east to west, or west to east. A solution to the quartic equation is given which simplifies the computation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
