The increases in weight, appetite, and hemoglobin and serum albumin levels, all highly desirable feature that go along with increased vigor, strength and sense of well-being, were side effects which opened up a promising new area of application. Such new uses were hampered, however, by the strong androgenic qualities. It was logical, therefore, that the pharmacologic chemists should extend their efforts to produce related new steroids that were more anabolic and less androgenic.
