Atividades de conservação e melhoramento genético requerem medidas de tamanho efetivo para manutenção e controle do potencial evolutivo das populações sob manipulação. Populações naturais são, muitas vezes, estruturadas e, conseqüentemente, podem apresentar algum grau de endogamia e parentesco. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever um simples estimador de tamanho efetivo de endogamia para populações de espécies monóicas com qualquer nível de endogamia e parentesco. O estimador foi derivado, assumindo-se que a endogamia é a mesma em todos os indivíduos da população. Ele pode ser utilizado em populações com pedigree conhecido ou o parentesco médio entre pares de indivíduos da população-alvo pode ser estimado a partir de dados de marcadores genéticos co-dominantes. Um exemplo é dado onde o estimador é aplicado em uma população de uma espécie arbórea monóica, Euterpe edulis.
Oito sistemas enzimáticos (EST, IDH, PGM, PGI, MDH, PER, 6PGDH e SKDH) codificando nove locos foram investigados em Esenbeckia leiocarpa. Quatro sistemas isoenzimáticos foram monomórficos (IDH, PGM, 6PGDH e SKDH) e quatro polimórficos (EST, PGI, MDH e PER). A herança mendeliana foi confirmada para quatro locos, pelo teste de ajuste dos padrões de segregação observados em relação à razão de segregação esperada 1:1, em progênies de árvores heterozigotas. O desequilíbrio de ligação foi examinado para dez pares de locos. Apenas um simples par de locos parece estar em desequilíbrio de ligação, Est-1:Prx-1.
O sistema de reprodução de duas populações naturais de Esenbeckia leiocarpa (guarantã) foi estudado em dois fragmentos florestais do Estado de São Paulo, a partir da análise de eletroforese de isoenzimas. A análise da taxa de cruzamento mostrou a espécie como alógama, porém o teste de homogeneidade nas freqüências do conjunto gênico do pólen e d.os óvulos e a correlação. de paternidade ( r ) revelaram que os cruzamentos nas populaçõ'és naturais de E. leiocarpa não foram aleatórios, gerando uma pequena quantidade de indivíduos por cruzamentos entre aparentados e preferenciais. A correlação da taxa de autofecundação ( fs ) revelou que os indivíduos de autofecundação encontram-se aleatoriamente distribuídos dentro das progênies e a correlação de paternidade ( r P ) indicou a existência de uma alta proporção de im1ãos completos dentro das progênies de polinização livre. Por sua vez, comparando os parâmetros do sistema de reprodução entre os fragmentos, verificou-se a ausência de diferenças entre o maior (Caetetus) e o menor (lbicatu) fragmento.
