RESUMO -Os óxidos mistos de zircônio apresentam diferentes propriedades estruturais e catalíticas conforme ao óxido metálico agregado a sua estrutura e ao seu método de preparação. No presente trabalho é apresentada a preparação e caracterização do dióxido de zircônio e dos óxidos mistos zircônio-alumina, zircônia-magnésia e zircônia-alumina-magnésia. Os catalisadores foram preparados pelo método sol-gel, calcinados a 673 e 873 K e caracterizados por difração de raios-X. A partir dos difratogramas foi possível observar como a introdução dos íons Mg +2 e Al +3 e a temperatura de calcinação influenciam a estrutura dos óxidos mistos de zircônio. INTRODUÇÃOÓxidos contendo dois ou mais tipos de cátions metálicos são conhecidos como óxidos mistos (Silva et al., 2008). Esses óxidos têm um papel muito importante na pesquisa acadêmica, bem como industrial, devido a suas propriedades ácidas e básica e redox, constituindo a maior família de catalisadores em catálise heterogênea.O dióxido de zircônio (ZrO 2 ), também conhecido como zircônia, é um suporte catalítico e catalisador promissor para a obtenção de novos produtos derivados do etanol. A sua característica especial é possuir tanto sítios ácidos quanto básicos de Lewis, podendo ser utilizado tanto em reações de desidrogenação quanto de desidratação de álcoois, sendo particularmente um excelente receptor para o íon O 2- (Tyagi et al., 2006). Contudo, o óxido pode ser considerado mais ácido ou básico conforme o seu método de preparação, o qual influencia diretamente em propriedades como a estrutura cristalina, distribuição de tamanho, volume total dos poros, área superficial e distribuição de sítios básicos e ácidos do ZrO 2 (Aramendía et al., 1997).A estrutura cristalina de óxidos mistos, e outros tipos de catalisadores, podem ser caracterizados mediante a difração de raios-X. Esta técnica baseia-se no fato que os átomos da maior parte dos cristais se ordenam em planos cristalinos separados entre si por distâncias da mesma ordem de grandeza dos comprimentos de onda dos raios. Ao incidir um feixe de raios-X em um cristal, o mesmo interage com os átomos presentes, originando o fenômeno de difração. Essa ocorre segundo a Lei de Bragg, a qual estabelece a relação entre o ângulo de difração e a distância entre os planos que a originaram, que são característicos para cada fase cristalina (Holler e Skoog et al., 2009).
