A burst of eight neutrino events preceding the optical detection of the supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been observed in a large underground water Cherenkov detector. The events span an interval of 6 s and have visible energies in the range 20-40 MeV.
Muon neutrinos produced as a result of cosmic-ray interactions with the atmosphere are used to search for v^ oscillations into v z by comparing the measured rate of upward-going muons in the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven detector with the expected rate. In addition, the ratio of upward-going muons which stop in the detector to those which exit is used to search for deviations from the expected spectrum. This latter technique is free of flux and cross-section normalization uncertainties. No evidence for oscillations is found. 90% C.L. limits on dm 2 are derived in the range (l-2)x 10~4 eV 2 for sin 2 20>O.5.
Transplant center-based education classes significantly and positively impact African-American concerns and beliefs surrounding living donation. Community and national strategies utilizing culturally sensitive communication and interventions can ameliorate disparities and improve access to transplantation.
Anecdotal reports have suggested that transplantation of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody positive (Ab+)/nucleic acid test negative (NAT-) donor kidneys into HCV negative recipients is not associated with HCV transmission. We reviewed our center's outcomes of 32 HCV negative patients who received kidney allografts from 25 donors who were HCV Ab+/NAT-. The mean recipient age was 56.9 ± 12.1 years and the mean donor age was 41.5 ± 14 years, with a median Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) of 68%. Twelve donors (48%) met Public Health Service (PHS) increased risk status. All patients received antithymocyte globulin induction followed by tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroid maintenance immunosuppression. With a mean follow-up posttransplant of 10 ± 2.7 months, 1- and 3- month serum creatinine levels were 1.7 ± 0.8 and 1.3 ± 0.4, respectively, and patient and graft survival rates were 100% and 97%, respectively. Fourteen patients (44%) seroconverted and became HCV Ab+ posttransplant. However, all 32 patients were HCV RNA negative at 1- and 3- months posttransplant, and 27 and 8 patients tested at 6- and 12-months posttransplant, respectively, remain HCV RNA negative. In conclusion, transplantation of HCV Ab+/NAT- kidneys to HCV negative recipients frequently causes HCV Ab seroconversion but not HCV viremia.
We have previously demonstrated that decreased O2 tension inhibits prostaglandin synthesis from human corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells in static culture over 8-18 h (R. B. Moreland et al., Molecular Urology 2: 41-47, 1998). In this report, an experimental system was designed that allowed determination of the effects of O2 tension changes over the time frame of physiological penile erection. Human corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells were cultured on microcarrier beads in enclosed stirrer flasks so that rapid changes of O2 tension could be modulated. After 18 h of equilibration at 30-40 mmHg to simulate blood PO2 at penile flaccidity, O2 tension was increased to 100 mmHg for 1 h and then returned to 30-40 mmHg. Media samples were withdrawn for prostanoid synthesis and cell samples were taken for cAMP determinations. After 18 h of 30-40 mmHg PO2 values, prostanoid synthesis by human corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells was low (0.1-0.7 pmol/10(6) cells). When PO2 was increased to 100 mmHg, a rapid increase in PGE2 >> PGF2alpha > PGD2 was observed (thromboxane A2 was undetectable), which peaked at 5.7 pmol PGE2/10(6) cells. Increased O2 tension correlated with increased PGE2 and increased intracellular synthesis of cAMP. The prostaglandin G/H synthase inhibitor indomethacin or the E prostanoid (EP2)-selective antagonist AH-6809 each inhibited the O2-tension-dependent increases in cAMP. These data support a role of differential O2 tension in the penis in the smooth muscle synthesis of PGE2, which in turn increases cAMP synthesis via EP2 receptors.
