The Raman spectra of fused LiSCN, NaSCN and KSCN about 20°C above their melting points and aqueous solutions of Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs thiocyanates up to 13.6m are reported. The Raman frequencies, qualitative intensities, depolarization ratios, and vibrational force constants are discussed. The spectral data are consistent with a Coou point-group symmetry for the thiocyanate ion. The structure of the thiocyanate is discussed relative to the possible configurations contributing to its ground state ; it appears that in ionic melts S-C = N is the predominating form. The solid-state spectra, melt spectra, and aqueous solution spectra are examined for environmental effects.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
