The purpose of the study is to identify the effect of a metacognition-based instructional practice on metacognitive awareness of prospective teachers. The study has been carried out through "Pre-test -Post-test Control Group Model" which is one of the models in experimental design. The study group consists of 44 prospective teachers having education at Department of Turkish Language Education at a State University selected for either experimental or control group according to the result of the cluster analysis. For the experimental group, a metacognitive-based instructional practice has been carried out. On the other hand, current education schedule has been followed for the control group. "Metacognitive Awareness Scale" has been used as a data collection tool. According to the research results, metacognitive awareness scores are significantly different at some sub-dimensions in favor of the experimental group. A metacognition-based instructional practice has positively affected the improvement of the prospective teachers. It is suggested that future studies should be carried out by including all courses at the faculties of education. Evaluation of the Faculty of Dentistry Students' Preferences for Specialization in PedodonticsBackground: The aim of this study is to investigate the thoughts of the students of Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry about the specialty in dentistry and to reveal their motivation about specialization in the department of Pedodontics. Methods: 84 3rd grade, 53 4th grade, 59 5th grade students studying at Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry participated in the study. Students were asked to fill in online questionnaires containing their opinions on dentistry specialization. Data were evaluated using descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square test (p=0.05).Results: 196 students, 73 boys and 123 girls, participated in the survey. While Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the first department preferred as a specialty in dentistry with 38.8%, the rate of students who consider pedodontics specialization is 11.7%. 48.5% of the respondents stated that they first recognized the Pedodontics department in the preclinical department. 56.1% of the students stated that pedodontics was mostly affected by their clinical experiences. In addition, the section considered to be the most difficult to care for patients was Pedodontics with 44.9%. 28.1% of the students had a negative first clinical experience with pedodontics. Conclusion:According to our study results, the specialty career goals of the students first appear in the preclinical period, and then they are shaped by clinical experience, financial concerns and professional interest. In the education period, students can be informed about communication methods with pediatric patients in detail and their first experiences in the pedodontics clinic with children with high cooperation can increase the interest in the field of expertise.
Recurrent tooth discoloration due to the increase in roughness after polishing is a concern for patients and dentists. This study evaluated the surface roughness of primary molars after different polishing methods through atomic force microscopy (AFM). A total of 88 primary teeth were randomly assigned to 4 groups, 22 teeth in each group. Before polishing, roughness measurements and visualizations were performed with AFM. The teeth were polished with four different polishing pastes (Imipomza®, Septodent Détartrine®, Kerr Cleanic®, Shofu Mersaage Regular ®) in line with the manufacturer's recommendations. After polishing, average roughness (Ra) values, which express the surface roughness of the re-scanned teeth. The Ra scores were then statistically analysed. In the groups; while there was no significant difference in terms of roughness values (Ra) within the group (p > 0.05), a statistically significant reduction in roughness (Ra) was observed on the sample surfaces after polishing in all groups compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). All polishing methods used in the treatment of primary tooth discoloration can reduce the plaque formation and thus the amount of recoloring by reducing the surface roughness at a similar level. The traditional polishing method (pumice polishing brush), which is more economical and easy to reach, can continue to be used instead of existing polishing pastes in removing discoloration on primary teeth.
Purpose:The Covid-19 pandemic has affected our daily lives by affecting the whole world and caused our habits to change. One ofthe effects of the epidemic has been on education. With the spread of the epidemic, online education has become the only way to maintain the normal teaching order. In this case, it directly affects the quality of education received. The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a difference between the exam scores made face to face and online. Methods:Students who were 3rd grade in 2018-2019 and 4th grade in 2019-2020 academic year were included in the study.Thescores that these students got in the Pedodontics Theoretical Exam within two years were evaluated. Exam scores according to time were analyzed with Friedman Test and Wilcoxon Test. Results:In the 2019-2020 academic year, the median values of the scores obtained from the exams that took the first examface-to-face and the second and third exams online varied (p<0.001).The median values of the scores obtained in the online exams(median values of 90 and 95, respectively) (the mean values are 89.6±8.7, 93.8±9, respectively), the median values of the scores obtained from the theoretical exam (median 70, mean 67.2±18.1) was obtained higher. On the other hand ,it was observed that there was a significant increase between the scores obtained by the same students from the exams held face-to-face in the previous year(median 74, mean 74.1±7.1) and the scores they took from the online exams they obtained the next year (median 89, mean87.7±9.1)(p<0.001). Conclusion:The results of the exams made with the online system are higher than the exam scores performed face to face.Thismay be due to the insufficient control mechanisms of the online exam system. For this reason, online exam security measuresshould be increased.
