Í greininni er fjallað um hugmyndina um rómantíska ást eins og hún birtist í vestrænni menningu frá því á fyrri hluta tuttugustu aldar og til okkar daga. Spurt er hvort þróun hennar tengist auknu pólitísku og félagslegu valdi kvenna á tuttugustu öld og þeirri röskun sem í kjölfarið varð á valdajafnvægi kynjanna. Hugmyndin um vald rómantískrar ástar er rótgróin í menningu vestrænna samfélaga þar sem hún hefur lengi verið táknmynd frelsis en er í dag notuð til að markaðssetja og selja varning, vörumerki og hugmyndafræði. Rómantísk ást er einnig mikilvægur drifkraftur kynjakerfisins. Þar gengur ástarkraftur kaupum og sölum á markaðstorgi þar sem hallar mjög á annað kynið. Í greininni er sjónum beint að ýmsu dægurefni sem setur ástina og einkum hlutverk kvenna í forgrunn, þar á meðal kvikmyndum og sjónvarpsefni. Efnið er greint með aðferðum orðræðugreiningar og stuðst við kenningar Evu Illouz um hagræn áhrif markaðssetningar á rómantískri ást í ljósi kenninga Horkheimer og Adorno um menningariðnaðinn. Einnig eru tengsl slíkrar markaðssetningar við kenningar Önnu Guðrúnar Jónasdóttur um ástarkraftinn könnuð.
