In survey research from Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) populations, students report predominantly studying by rereading, highlighting, and summarizing, which are generally inefficient for long-term learning. It is unknown, however, whether, and to what extent, diversity, in the form of cultural context, socioeconomic status (SES), and sex, affect choice of study technique. In this exploratory study, we investigated the frequency of use of 10 common study strategies used by WEIRD students in a sample of respondents (N ϭ 795) from a developing country (Brazil). We also examined if SES and sex influenced study choices. A similar pattern of study strategy preferences emerged for Brazilian compared to WEIRD students. The most popular study strategy for Brazilian students was rereading, followed by highlighting, summarizing, and doing practice problems. Study strategy preferences were not modulated by SES, whereas some small but significant sex differences were found. Our data show that interventions designed to improve academic success by teaching effective study strategies should reach all students, irrespective of cultural context and SES, but should consider possible sex-specific differences in strategy choices.
Extension Project "Study Group on Neuroscience": spreading neuroscience and inspiring vocations Abstract: Neuroscience is a highly publicized issue throughout the media but rarely addressed in the curriculum of undergraduate courses. In order to change this reality, the Study Group on Neuroscience (GEN) is an extension project developed at the Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná - UENP, has as its main goals the task of promoting discussions of articles previously selected by the group’s coordinator (teaching), to encourage the participants to develop scientific projects (research) and to deliver lectures on themes related to neuroscience (extension). These activities are concentrated mainly in the organization of the "Brain Awareness Week", a global campaign which promotes talks with the objective of disseminating knowledge on neuroscience to the general public. Thus, the aim of this paper is to report the experiences of the GEN, in order to encourage similar initiatives in other institutions. For this, we described in detail the progress since its inception in 2012 to date. As a direct result of the activities developed, this paper aims to report the experiences of the GEN as a means to encourage similar activities in other institutions. For this, we described in details the progress from the beginning of our project in 2012 until the present moment. From these actions we perceived that the weekly meetings of the GEN continuously promoted critical thinking on the participants from the discussion on topics that were addressed superficially by the popular media. The extension actions demonstrated not only relevance for the dissemination of neuroscience studies, but also to bring the GEN to attention. Although the pieces of research linked to GEN need further attention, the discussions carried out have helped students finding their vocation in neuroscience which was evidenced by the approval of students in courses and internships in centers of excellence in this field. In "Knowing the Brain 2019", an extension action carried out by students and teachers of the institution focusing on scientific dissemination, two stands proposed recreational activities addressing neuroanatomy and neurohistology. The purpose of this work is to report the proposals and provide subsidies for their reply. The action was divided into three stages: explaining the brain with a sample of real anatomical pieces and a didactic model; visualization of a histological section of the brain through the optical microscope and an inclusive didactic model; and games to reinforce the information learned. As a result, 335 Basic Education students, university students, and the general public visited the event and interacted with the stands' didactic proposal. The visitors asked questions, manipulated the teaching materials, and played with the memory game of the lobes. In addition to this interaction and contribution to the scientific literacy of the external community, actions that disseminate science are also important for students' intellectual and professional growth. It is suggested that the teaching materials described here can be used to facilitate neuroanatomy and neurohistology learning. Keywords: Neuroscience; Basic Education; Teaching; University Extension
