Polar marine ecosystems have global ecological and economic importance because of their unique biodiversity and their major role in climate processes and commercial fisheries, among others. Portugal and Spain have been highly active in a wide range of disciplines in marine biology of the Antarctic and the Arctic. This article analyses the impact of public investment on private investment. Apart from purely ideological aspects, two opposing interpretations may be distinguished with regard to the relationship between these variables. The first is that there is competition between public and private investment, so that the former "crowds out" the latter. The second is that public investment is complementary to private investment in so far that, by generating positive externalities, it creates favourable conditions for the latter. In view of the relative scarcity of empirical studies on this matter, this study deals with the case of the Brazilian economy in the period from 1947 to 1990. Its main conclusions are that private investment is indeed crowded out by public investment in the short term, but in the long term the cointegration vector coefficients indicate that these two variables complement each other.
Aimed at improving the quality of school meals, the Sustainable School Program (SSP) implemented low-carbon meals, twice a week, in 155 schools of 4 municipalities, reaching more than 32,000 students. This study evaluated the environmental impact and nutritional viability of this intervention for this population. The 15 most repeated meals from the conventional and sustainable menus were selected, and we considered the school age group and number of meals served per student/day. Nutritional information was calculated using validated food composition tables, nutritional adequacy was assessed using National School Feeding Program (PNAE) requirements, the level of processing was considered using NOVA classification, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) were estimated using food life cycle assessment (LCA) validated data. We found both conventional and sustainable food menus are equivalent, in terms of nutrients, except for calcium, iron, and magnesium. Sustainable food menus were cholesterol-free. However, there was a reduction of up to 17% in GHGE, depending on the school age group analysed. Considering the greater energy efficiency and lower environmental impact of these food menus, the SSP, therefore, demonstrates that a substantial reduction in climate impact is feasible, successful, and can be an inspiration to other regions globally.
O Brasil está entre os países mais desiguais do mundo, e esta desigualdade expressa-se também em níveis regionais. Entre os fatos mais comuns indicadores das desigualdades entre regiões, costuma-se destacar que o Nordeste tem 27% da população e uma participação no produto interno bruto (PIB) de 14%, ou seja, o PIB per capita da região representa aproximadamente metade do PIB per capita brasileiro.Como forma de enfrentar tais desequilíbrios, a Constituição Federal de 1988, em seu art. 3 o , ressalta que um dos objetivos da República Federativa seria exatamente a redução das desigualdades regionais. Assim, seria papel do Estado brasileiro desenvolver ações para reduzir estas desigualdades. É importante advertir, contudo, que a concentração de atividades econômicas no território representa mais do que uma exceção, mostra-se como uma regra ao longo da história e em diferentes locais do mundo.

Many manufacturers quickly created hundreds of devices implementing functionalities but neglected some critical issues pertaining to device security. is oversight gave rise to the current situation where thousands of devices remain unpatched having many security issues that manufacturers cannot address after the devices have been produced and deployed. is article presents our novel research protecting IOT devices using Berkeley Packet Filters (BPFs) and evaluates our findings with the aid of our Filter.tlk tool, which is able to facilitate the development of BPF expressions that can be executed by GNU/Linux systems with a low impact on network packet throughput.
