Objetivos: Identificar como é o atendimento do enfermeiro na Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS); identificar o perfil das crianças atendidas na UBS; discutir a contribuição do enfermeiro na promoção de uma nutrição infantil de qualidade na UBS. Métodos: Pesquisa de campo, descritiva, qualitativa, com a coleta de dados em arquivo documental e observação da consulta de enfermagem em uma UBS de São Gonçalo/RJ. Os sujeitos foram três enfermeiras que realizavam a puericultura de 30 crianças. Resultados: Muitos dados não estavam no prontuário devido à falta de acompanhamento ou de falha da equipe em anotar os dados. Perfil das crianças: predomínio de meninos, faixa etária de 1 ano, 37% nascidos de partos normais, 60% a termo, 42% com aleitamento materno complementar, 57% não tinham sido internadas e 67% possuíam esquema vacinal completo. Foi observada baixa qualidade na prestação da Assistência de Enfermagem e um grande número de absenteísmo. As orientações feitas quase não eram seguidas pelas mães. Conclusão: O enfermeiro deve ter uma visão ampliada de seus clientes e ter uma concepção diferenciada sobre a consulta de enfermagem, não baseada apenas nos aspectos técnicos, mas somados a prestação do cuidado integral do indivíduo e a formação de vínculo por meio da escuta terapêutica.Palavras-chave: cuidados de enfermagem, cuidado da criança, atenção primária à saúde, nutrição do lactente.
