O conhecimento da variação e da distribuição das precipitações permite determinar períodos críticos predominantes numa determinada região e reduzir consequências causadas pelas flutuações do regime pluviométrico. Vários modelos de distribuição de frequência têm sido utilizados, visando à estimativa da precipitação provável para diferentes locais e períodos de ocorrência. No presente trabalho os dados de registros pluviométricos do município de Jequitinhonha, entre 1977 a 2002, foram utilizados para adequação dos modelos de distribuição de probabilidades. Os registros pluviométricos dos anos de 1950 a 2019, da mesma estação, foram utilizados para comparar as precipitações prováveis aos dados históricos e verificar a ocorrência de veranicos. Considerando o nível de probabilidade de 75%, verificou-se uma precipitação provável no período chuvoso (novembro a março) de 70,6 mm e no período seco (abril a outubro) de 13,7 mm. No mês de dezembro, com 75% de probabilidade de ocorrência, é esperada uma lâmina de 114 mm. A irregular distribuição das chuvas e a severidade dos veranicos nos anos de 2015 a 2019 resultou em perda de produção de grãos, diminuição da segurança alimentar e desabastecimento das famílias.
