ABSTRACT Introduction: there is increased HIV infection among heterosexual couples, even in stable and faithful relationships. Objective: to assess sexual behavior and risk to acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among health area faculty working at a university in southern Brazil. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted between December 2009 and March 2010. Health area faculty members working at a university in southern Brazil were included in the survey. Upon approval, anonymous and self-administered questionnaire was used, which included data on sociodemographic characteristics, risk sexual behavior for exposure to HIV and STDs, as well as additional risk factors to diseases acquired intra...
ABSTRACTCurrent evidence suggests that the peripheral nervous system has a large number of insulin receptors. This finding indicates that insulin can have a major impact on neural regeneration, since there is an increase in the number of these receptors after nerve injury. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the systemic use of insulin for neural regeneration in Wistar rats with induced neural injury. Method. Different doses (0.05 UI and 0.01 UI) of NPH insulin or identical volumes of normal saline were injected at subcutaneous of rats with induced axonotmesis. The rats were followed by 45 days approaching the first day of finger flexion and in the end of this time they were accessed for sensibility and grasping test. Results. The rats submitted to insulin 0.05 UI showed a nearly recuperation of neural function and had upgrade of 70g in grasping test in comparison to control group. There were no evidences of benefit in sensibility recover with insulin use. Conclusion. These results suggest that high doses of insulin can provide positive influence at post-injury neuronal recover.
