RESUMOO trabalho avaliou o efeito da abreviação do jejum pré-operatório sobre a taxa de intercorrências, complicações pós-operatórias e tempo de internação hospitalar em pacientes submetidos a cirurgia oncológica em um hospital universitário. Tratou-se de estudo de intervenção com temporalidade mista, controlado, com pacientes adultos e idosos, candidatos a cirurgia eletiva por câncer. O grupo jejum tradicional (controle) foi submetido a jejum após a ceia. O grupo jejum abreviado (intervenção) recebeu 200mL de solução de carboidrato (maltodextrina) a 12,5%, às 6 horas da manhã no dia da cirurgia. Os demais cuidados perioperatórios foram semelhantes nos dois grupos. O tempo de jejum, a ocorrência de complicações perioperatórias, náuseas e vômitos e o tempo para retorno da função intestinal após a cirurgia foram monitorados. Dosagens de glicemia, PC-r e proteínas totais e frações, o tempo de internação, o número de óbitos e reinternações foram registradas. A maioria dos pacientes incluídos foram submetidos a cirurgia por câncer de trato gastrointestinal baixo. Como resultados, foi observado que a intervenção reduziu o tempo de jejum pré-operatório de 12 para 3 horas (p=0,0001). Nenhuma complicação intraoperatória foi relacionada à intervenção.
