O tabagismo é um fator de risco evitável para câncer, doenças cardiovasculares, respiratórias e DPOC. O uso do tabagismo promove efeitos progressivos sobre a função pulmonar, podendo ter impacto direto sobre a qualidade de vida, mesmo nos estágios iniciais quando ainda não possuem diagnóstico de DPOC. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade de vida entre os indivíduos tabagistas, ex-tabagistas e não tabagistas. Foi realizado um estudo transversal observacional com 54 voluntários, sendo 18 tabagistas, 18 ex-tabagistas e 18 não tabagistas, do sexo masculino, com idade entre 50 e 80 anos. Foram excluídos os voluntários com diagnóstico de DPOC, doenças restritivas, câncer de pulmão, traqueia ou brônquio. A qualidade de vida foi avaliada através do questionário Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36). Os tabagistas apresentaram pior qualidade de vida, verificada através dos domínios capacidade funcional, saúde mental e estado geral de saúde em comparação com os ex-tabagistas e não tabagistas. Não houve diferenças entre os ex-tabagistas e não tabagistas. Não houve diferença na carga tabágica comparando os grupos tabagistas e os ex-tabagistas. Podemos concluir que o tabagismo reduz a qualidade de vida, particularmente capacidade funcional, saúde mental e estado geral de saúde. A cessação do tabagismo promove reversibilidade da qualidade de vida.
