EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY OF HYDROGRAPHIC BASINS THROUGH THE WATER QUALITY INDEX TOOL -WQIAbstract: For centuries water was considered a public domain property of infinite quantity. Currently, the world's concern is focused on the quality of water for human consumption, since the development of cities and the increase in population have directly influenced the increase of pollution and degradation of natural resources. Consequently, it is necessary to use mechanisms that enable the standards of water bodies and the determination of their quality. Several tools were proposed based on the physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the water. Among them, the Water Quality Index (WQI) stands out, which is an important methodology to measure the national water standard. Thus, this article presents
A new modified electrode for indirect sensing of OH · and radical scavengers was described. The electrochemical polymerization of methylene blue in aqueous solutions and the properties of the resulting films on a glassy carbon electrode were carried out using cyclic voltammetry. A surface coverage of 1.11 × 10 9 mol cm 2 was obtained, revealing a complete surface coverage of the polymeric film on the electrode surface. OH · was able to destroy the poly(methylene blue) film by exposure to a Fenton solution. The loss of the electrochemical signal of the residual polymeric film attached to the electrode surface was related to the extent of its dissolution. The applicability of the sensor was demonstrated by evaluating the OH radical scavenging effect on different concentrations of ascorbic acid. The obtained radical scavenging capacity were 31.4%, 55.7%, 98.9% and 65.7% for the ascorbic acid concentrations of 5, 10, 30 and 50 mM, respectively.
Abstract:The wastewater treatment is an issue that has been studied in recent years due to the great degenerative potential of the environment. The availability of nutrients, particularly phosphorus, cause eutrophication of rivers and lakes. The electrocoagulation is a simple application technique for removing pollutants. Here, Design of Experiments (DoE) was applied for the optimization of the efficiency of the phosphorus removal process by electrocoagulation using a simple synthetic medium. Based on a fractional factorial design and literature data, potential applied, electrolysis time and electrolyte's initial conductivity were identified as significant variables. Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and Response Surface Method (RSM) were then used for optimization. The amplitude of the experimental domain in this study was limited by the equipment used (maximum of 25 V). Even so, the maximum phosphorus removal of 97.1% was estimated at potential of 25 V applied for 12.5 min using an initial conductivity of 1.1 mS cm -1 . The validation of the model was carried out and presented a reduction of 92% for phosphorus removal, obtaining a response only 5.1% below the expected, which proves the multivariate model's reliability.
