Book Reviews 585 suggests another reason that historians were misled into assuming the existence of an antiurban cultural bias. Those writers were often at odds with their culture, and most important literature is against the grain. They were not affirming either country or urban values but were questioning the nation's ideal of urban pastoralism. The point has been made elsewhere, but Machor presents his argument well. This is a satisfying study characterized by lucidity, able writing, and the best kind ofscholarship. One would hope that it may serve as a model for the History of American Thought and Culture series of which it is part.
