Historically, mentoring in higher education has proven to be a valuable and effective tool in promoting interaction between students and faculty. African American men in particular have reaped the benefits of formally structured mentoring programs at colleges and universities.
Student affairs professionals must continue to encourage ethnic minority students to become widely involved in student governance activities. This involvement will help to foster an environment that promotes human growth and development and also aid the institution in retaining these students.
