Enabling smart technology uses a system of pre-recorded prompts or messages to support people with dementia to live independently. The aim is to use an integrated messaging system to support an individual's independence. Bath Institute of Medical Engineering evaluated this technology over a 12-month period in a Housing 21, very sheltered housing, flat with a single tenant who had moderate dementia.
This practice experience has highlighted the importance of a therapeutic approach to ensure that the use of technology is optimised for the benefit of vulnerable adults and their families.
Current research into sleep in care homes indicates that care-giving processes at night disturb vital sleep-a key element in the everyday wellbeing of older people. This article considers the use of technology to support the provision of relationship-centred care at night. Within the context of a large study on sleep in later life, research was carried out to gain an understanding of care staff's acceptance of technology. The findings indicate a hesitancy to rely on technology. To fulfil a professional duty of care at night, the personal assessment of a resident's wellbeing is perceived as best when performed by care-home staff. However, in night-time care, a relationship-centred approach supported by technology has the potential to improve the sleep of older people living in care homes, which in turn could improve their active participation in everyday life.
Abstract-This paper examines the broadband distortion behavior in flexible filters employing varactor-diode tuning elements. Series-and parallel-resonant varactor-loaded transmission-lines, both commonly used in bandpass and bandstop microwave filters, are analyzed. Nonlinear Volterra-series analysis is employed to determine the second-and third-order distortion ratios dependent on the frequencies of the incident signals. It is shown that in a bandpass filter (employing parallel tuned resonators), maximum distortion occurs in the passband, while in a bandstop filter (employing series tuned resonators), minimum distortion occurs at the minimum-loss passband. The analysis is verified by practical measurement of filters employing the two modes of resonators.
