I denne artikkelen diskuterer jeg den såkalte institusjonsteoriens forsøk på å fange i en beskrivelse hva som gjør kunsten til kunst, det jeg har kalt det kunstneriske ved kunsten eller kunstens kunstvaeren. Ifølge institusjonsteorien er det institusjonelle trekket ved kunsten ikke bare en viktig side ved kunstverket, det utgjør selve begrepskjennetegnet for kunst. Selv om jeg finner det fruktbart å betrakte kunstverket som et fenomen som ikke kan forstås isolert fra sin institusjonelle kontekst, argumenterer jeg mot at kunst kan defineres på denne måten. Kunstfilosofiens oppgave kan heller ikke vaere å angi nødvendige og tilstrekkelige betingelser for det å vaere kunst.Institusjonsteorier om kunst knytter kunstens kunstvaeren til det å ta del i en større sammenheng, en institusjon i vid forstand. Innenfor analytisk estetikk blir termen Institusjonsteorien om kunst først og fremst knyttet til George Dickie. Uavhengig av Dickie har Søren Kjørup utviklet en institusjonsteori om kunst som på avgjørende måter skiller seg ut fra Dickies versjon. Jeg vil her avgrense meg til å diskutere Dickies og Kjørups versjoner som eksempler på institusjonsteorier. Selv om han eksplisitt har sagt seg uenig i viktige sider ved den såkalte Institusjonsteorien, var det Arthur Danto som satte diskusjonen om kunstens institusjonelle karakter på dagsorden. Derfor velger jeg Danto som innfallsvinkel til min historie.Men historien begynner ikke i filosofien, den begynner i et kunstgalleri. Våren 1964 fant en kunstutstilling sted i Stable Gallery i New York. Kunstnerens navn var Andy Warhol, og utstillingen var hans første i et seriøst galleri i New York. Warhol hadde stilt ut en rekke duplikater av produktemballasje, esker som til forveksling lignet esker brukt til dagligdagse og kjente amerikanske forbruksvarer som Kellogs' corn flakes, Heinz tomatketchup, Del Monte hermetisk fersken, Campbell's tomatjuice og Brillo soap pads.Eskene så ut som vanlig produktemballasje, men de var det ikke, de var laget av kunstneren selv, i en type silketrykk.
