Approximately 50% of the Shetland Islands' are covered by blanket bogs which mask the acid substrate. If the underground is alkaline no bog could exist. The bog covers the base of the slopes and the summits up to an altitude of about 200 m. Above that level the coverage consists of periglacial deposits which support another type of vegetation commonly associated with «terrassettes». The formation of the blanket bog started during the Holocene (in particular during the Subboreal period). The datings are based on samples taken from the island of Yell.
The blanket bog, which often exceeds a thickness of 2 m, is subject to erosion tending to uncover the summits and to create channels on the higher slopes. Heavy rainfall can cause catastrophic sliding of the blanket bog.
This phenomenon, known as «bog flow» or «bog burst», constitues a hazard for the population, and also puts at risk any future development.
