This study recognises modifiable factors that influence the daily foot-exam practice of patients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. Using the findings of this study, health professionals can design interventions that aim to modify the above factors as a means to promote daily foot-exam practice.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the 11th most common cancer worldwide, and is associated with a high death rate. At present, there are no suitable markers for detecting and/or monitoring OSCC in body fluids/tissues. Here, we used 1D SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS to systematically analyze the secretomes of two OSCC cell lines (OEC-M1 and SCC4). The putative OSCC-related proteins identified in this analysis included the Mac-2 binding protein (Mac-2 BP), which was further found to be overexpressed in OSCC specimens and significantly elevated in the sera of OSCC patients compared to healthy controls. Finally, RNA interference-based knock-down of Mac-2 BP expression in OSCC cells revealed for the first time that Mac-2 BP is involved in regulating growth and motility of OSCC cells.
Postoperative serum Tg levels can be used as a prognostic indicator in patients with papillary and follicular thyroid cancer. For patients with Tg levels greater than or equal to 10 ng/ml, Tg levels are a useful marker to predict prognosis.
Near-infrared Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy was employed to study the molecular structure of edible zein films/coatings, which were fabricated directly from zein protein. The secondary structure of zein protein was mainly in alpha-helix and remained unaltered during film formation as evidenced by the vibrational modes of amide I at 1656 cm(-1) and amide III at 1274 cm(-1). Raman results indicated that hydrophobic interaction played an important role in the formation of zein film and disulfide bonding might be responsible for the structural stability of zein protein during film formation. To enhance its antimicrobial property, an antimicrobial zein film was manufactured by incorporating zein protein with benzoic acid whose structure was then characterized by FT-Raman. It showed that physical entrapment or hydrophobic interaction was crucial to the incorporation of benzoic acid with zein protein, and the secondary structure of the antimicrobial film was still maintained in alpha-helical form. In addition, FT-Raman exhibits its preference in directly determining the thickness of zein films/coatings. By correlating the Raman intensity ratio of nu(1003) to nu(84) (I(1003/84)) versus the thickness of zein film, a linear relationship with high coefficient (R(2) = 0.9927) was obtained, which was then used pragmatically to determine the thickness of zein coatings on apple. It showed that the FT-Raman result (thickness = 0.27 +/- 0.01 mm) was consistent with that of classical micrometric measurement (thickness = 0.28 +/- 0.02 mm). Consequently, FT-Raman provides a direct, simple, and reagent-free method to characterize the structure and the thickness of zein films/coatings.
To demonstrate the residual pituitary function of patients with Sheehan's syndrome years after the obstetric complication, 14 patients with postpartum hemorrhage followed by secondary amenorrhea and agalactia were included in this review. Due to their unfamiliarity with the clinical symptoms, these patients did not receive pretreatment hormonal therapy. The mean age at their last delivery was 29 years (range 21-38 years). The mean duration between postpartum hemorrhage and the subsequent clinical manifestations leading to the endocrine investigation was 18 years (range 1-33 years). Eight patients presented with symptoms of severe hyponatremia (serum sodium less than 125 mmol/l) more than 16 years (mean 23 +/- 10) after the occurrence of postpartum hemorrhage. The electrolyte abnormality was primarily due to adrenal dysfunction. Seven out of 14 patients had normal basal luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and adequate LH responses to gonadotropin releasing hormone stimulation. Administration of thyrotropin releasing hormone provoked thyrotropin release and/or prolactin secretion in four cases. The manifestation of clinical hypopituitarism and the degree of empty sella on computed tomography scanning did not accurately indicate the secreting ability of the pituitary in patients with Sheehan's syndrome. Although all the patients had amenorrhea, the gonadotropic functions of the pituitary still remain in some patients. Various degrees of other pituitary functions can also been demonstrated even several decades after the occurrence of obstetric complications. Our data suggest that the amenorrhea of Sheehan's patients is not simply due to a dysfunction of the pituitary gonadotrophs.
