NNossas experiências cotidianas na cidade – em sua face mais ordinária – são cada vez mais marcadas pela indiferença; pelo consumo temporário e pela carência de interações sociais espontâneas e significativas, que conformem o espaço público como forma social que admita acesso amplo e irrestrito às mais diferentes vozes e formas de apropriação (Sennet, 2006; Delgado, 1999; 2008); Deutsche, 2007). Neste contexto, interrogamos em que medida a obra The Death and Life of Great American Cities de Jane Jacobs – que se ocupou do espaço público cotidiano como poucos – ainda nos oferece elementos que nos permitam avançar sobre uma realidade já tão distinta da que originou a escrita de seu trabalho. Para além de um elogio à Jacobs, pretendemos aqui explorar as articulações dos principais elementos de sua obra, mas ao mesmo tempo reconhecer eventuais tensões e lacunas nela existentes que solicitam contextualizações e encaminhamentos complementares. Propomos assim revisitarmos sua obra nos perguntando o quanto/e como ainda é possível (ou não) convocar o olhar de Jacobs para pensarmos as condições da realização do espaço público na cidade contemporânea.Palavras-chave: Espaço público.
