La investigación se enfocó en la arquitectura moderna en Tunja (Colombia) durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, con atención en la obra del Ingeniero Arquitecto Ernesto Muñoz Navarro. Este arquitecto fue parte de la primera generación de estudiantes del programa de Ingeniería-Arquitectura de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y utilizó los principios de la arquitectura moderna para contribuir a la modernización de Tunja en un momento crucial para el país. Además, desarrolló su propio estilo arquitectónico y empleó sistemas de construcción y estructurales innovadores para la época (Pinilla Rodríguez, y otros, 2022, pág. 11) . La investigación partió de la donación de los planos de algunas de las obras del Ingeniero Arquitecto Ernesto Muñoz Navarro, por parte de su esposa, a la Universidad de Boyacá. La Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo decidió aprovechar esta oportunidad para llevar a cabo una investigación y así dar a conocer la obra de este arquitecto. Debido a la escasez de investigaciones y estudios sobre la arquitectura moderna en Tunja, se consideró que esta era una oportunidad valiosa para contribuir al conocimiento en este campo. Esto coincidió con una preocupación por la falta de apreciación del significado de la arquitectura moderna en Tunja, y su importancia en el desarrollo histórico de la ciudad. A pesar de que el PEMP (Plan Especial de Manejo y Protección del Centro Histórico de Tunja) ha identificado el valor único de algunas edificaciones modernas al otorgarles un alto nivel de conservación, la población de Tunja considera patrimonio solamente la arquitectura de la época colonial (Pinilla Rodríguez, y otros, 2022, pág. 11) . El libro presenta cuatro edificios diseñados por él, describiéndolos y evaluando su valor patrimonial para identificar qué aspectos de la tipología y la morfología de la edificación deben ser conservados durante una intervención, a fin de mantener su valor arquitectónico. Además, se plantea la necesidad de reflexionar sobre la importancia de la arquitectura moderna y su urgente reconocimiento como patrimonio, ya que las dinámicas urbanas actuales desconocen su historia y significado, lo que está provocando su deterioro y destrucción.
