Serving to community, they are often exposed to public judgement, especially city bridges, which are continuously seen by many viewers on the bridge and from the different angles in urban setting. Therefore, it is necessary to design not only reliable, durable and economical bridges, but also aesthetically pleasant structures. To design the bridge as a new city landmark, which meets the requirements of large traffic volumes of vehicles and light urban railway as well as intensive but comfortable pedestrian transport, a new approach to bridge design is required.

Structural-architectural approach, illustrated by beautiful bridges, which harmoniously fit into the urban environment on decent (Trogir Bridge) or representative (new bridges in Zagreb) way, designed by Bridge Division at Faculty of Civil Engineering - University of Zagreb, will be shown in this paper. Respecting the known aesthetics values, for Bundek Bridge a unique structure is formed, which is already applied in the new airport terminal design, but it can be also transformed for other future landmark buildings, e.g. central metro station, as a modern style of the 21st century Croatian capital.

The necessity of joining structural and architectural approaches to reach human-oriented structures and develop contemporary urban environment is presented through several examples. Projects of an airport, a stadium and few bridges as outcomes of collaboration between structural engineers and architects will be overviewed.

The design solution presented by authors from the Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Civil Engineering won the first prize award at the international competition organized by the Zagreb Airport. The structure and form of this solution are integrated through multidimensional approach in which individual factors-town planning, environmental aspects, architecture, structure, functionality, and traffic-are not given precedence one over another, but are rather evaluated as a whole made of equal parts. The principal airport building is covered with a fluid steel truss structure, which continuously expands into linear, tubular passenger piers on each side. The terminal building constitutes, together with proper regulation and development of surrounding space, a new dimension of development of the city of Zagreb, and its merger with Velika Gorica.
Strategy of development trends in this moment and at this stage of the traffic comes from understanding the possibilities of the implementation of measures to raise the quality of movement and life in the city. It also includes planning and implementation of targeted interventions in the transport network or facilities. Mobility is a complex process in the area, starting from the departure from the apartment, using various means of transportation, a number of activities in different goals until to return to the location of the apartment. It thus requires extensive transport infrastructure in the form of walkways, bicycle paths, street and railway network. At the same time, reshaping of public transport facilities is needed in which the pedestrian, biker and green concept shall be the main elements of the new spatial conditions. Pedestrian zones development in the city means to create pedestrian areas and green islands in all the places in the city where possible. This process is essential for the transformation of public spaces, in particular, transport corridors. To accomplish the concept of the green transport plan, the need for change in the parking policy is emphasized. This should be an integral part of the city planning and should go hand in hand with the traffic policy.
