The relative influence of different factors in children's word problem difficulties has not been established. Nevertheless, it is persistently assumed that poor reading contributes substantially to these difficulties. The written solutions of 35 sixth-graders to the word problem portion of the Metropolitan Achievement Test were assigned to nine disjoint groups. Poor reading could not have been a factor in the 52% of the problems that were incorrectly solved solely because of computational and clerical mistakes. Reading may or may not have been a factor in the remaining 48% of the incorrectly solved problems, but computational difficulties were clearly the major deterrent to success.
As the International System of Units (the SI Metric Unit System) is being integrated into our society, a large number of adults will need to be metrically "bilingual", that is, they will have to think in both systems. The goal is for everyone to "think metric", but this is difficult for people with whom the English system has been ingrained for years. Length, area, and mass have physical embodyments, which allow a "rule of thumb" comparison during the transition stage. Celsius temperature, though, seems to be more abstract and difficult to become accustomed to. The following is an approximate "rule of thumb" comparison from Celsius to Fahrenheit temperatures to help us get over the hump. Each Celsius degree is a bit larger than a Fahrenheit degree, in a ratio of 9 to 5. This is very close to 2 to 1. Since the Celsius degree is larger, there must be more Fahrenheit degrees to indicate the same amount of temperature change. Therefore, if Celsius temperature is reported, just double it, and that will be near the number of Fahrenheit degrees it is different from 32 . This is because the freezing temperature of water is 0 A large number of the birds are accidentally eating lead pellets from shot fired last year, 10 years ago or even in 1776.When a hunter misses, the lead pellets fall into the pond. The duck or goose eats them thinking they are the gravel the bird needs to grind up its food. The lead is absorbed into the bird's blood stream and begins an anemiatype reaction which eventually weakens the bird to the point where it cannot eat. Two to three million water fowl are thought to die each year of lead poisoning.
