The nanoporous metal-organic framework Fe2(azpy)4(NCS)4.(guest) (azpy is trans-4,4'-azopyridine) displays reversible uptake and release of guest molecules and contains electronic switching centers that are sensitive to the nature of the sorbed guests. The switching of this material arises from the presence of iron(II) spin crossover centers within the framework lattice, the sorbed phases undergoing "half-spin" crossovers, and the desorbed phase showing no switching property. The interpenetrated framework structure displays a considerable flexibility with guest uptake and release, causing substantial changes in the local geometry of the iron(II) centers. The generation of a host lattice that interacts with exchangeable guest species in a switchable fashion has implications for the generation of previously undeveloped advanced materials with applications in areas such as molecular sensing.

The nanoporous metal-organic framework [Fe(pz)Ni(CN)(4)], 1 (where pz is pyrazine), exhibits hysteretic spin-crossover at ambient conditions and is robust to the adsorption and desorption of a wide range of small molecular guests, both gases (N(2), O(2), CO(2)) and vapors (methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetonitrile, and toluene). Through the comprehensive analysis of structure, host-guest properties, and spin-crossover behaviors, it is found that this pillared Hofmann system uniquely displays both guest-exchange-induced changes to spin-crossover and spin-crossover-induced changes to host-guest properties, with direct dynamic interplay between these two phenomena. Guest desorption and adsorption cause pronounced changes to the spin-crossover behavior according to a systematic trend in which larger guests stabilize the high-spin state and therefore depress the spin-crossover temperature of the host lattice. When stabilizing the alternate spin state of the host at any given temperature, these processes directly stimulate the spin-crossover process, providing a chemisensing function. Exploitation of the bistability of the host allows the modification of adsorption properties at a fixed temperature through control of the host spin state, with each state shown to display differing chemical affinities to guest sorption. Guest desorption then adsorption, and vice versa, can be used to switch between spin states in the bistable temperature region, adding a guest-dependent memory effect to this system.

Butterfly magnet: The replacement of diamagnetic CoIII for CrIII in a 3d‐4f butterfly complex results in vastly improved single‐molecule magnet properties. Longer relaxation times are found, with magnetic hysteresis observed. This is due to exchange interactions between the DyIII and CrIII ions, resulting in a multilevel exchange barrier with significantly reduced quantum tunneling of the magnetization.

A family of dinuclear cobalt complexes with bridging bis(dioxolene) ligands derived from 3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobis(indane-5,5',6,6'-tetrol) (spiroH4) and ancillary ligands based on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) has been synthesized and characterized. The bis(dioxolene) bridging ligand is redox-active and accessible in the (spiro(cat-cat))(4-), (spiro(SQ-cat))(3-), and (spiro(SQ-SQ))(2-) forms, (cat = catecholate, SQ = semiquinonate). Variation of the ancillary ligand (Mentpa; n = 0-3) by successive methylation of the 6-position of the pyridine rings influences the redox state of the complex, governing the distribution of electrons between the cobalt centers and the bridging ligands. Pure samples of salts of the complexes [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](2+) (1), [Co2(spiro)(Metpa)2](2+) (2), [Co2(spiro)(Me2tpa)2](2+) (3), [Co2(spiro)(Me3tpa)2](2+) (4), [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](3+) (5), and [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](4+) (6) have been isolated, and 1, 4, and 6 have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Studies in the solid and solution states using multiple techniques reveal temperature invariant redox states for 1, 2, and 4-6 and provide clear evidence for four different charge distributions: 1 and 2 are Co(III)-(spiro(cat-cat))-Co(III), 4 is Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(II), 5 is Co(III)-(spiro(SQ-cat))-Co(III), and 6 is Co(III)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(III). Of the six complexes, only 3 shows evidence of temperature dependence of the charge distribution, displaying a rare thermally induced two-step valence tautomeric transition from the Co(III)-(spiro(cat-cat))-Co(III) form to Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-cat))-Co(III) and then to Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(II) in both solid and solution states. This is the first time a two-step valence tautomeric (VT) transition has been observed in solution. Partial photoinduction of the VT transition is also possible in the solid. Magnetic and spectroscopic studies of 5 and 6 reveal that spiroconjugation of the bis(dioxolene) ligand allows electronic interaction across the spiro bridge, suggesting that thermally activated vibronic coupling between the two cobalt-dioxolene moieties plays a key role in the two-step transition evident for 3.

A number of dicopper(II) complexes of reduced Schiff base ligands, N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-amino acids [Cu2L2(H2O)x].yH2O (L = Sgly (1), D-Sala (2), L-Sala (3), DL-Sala (4), Sab2 (5), Sbal (6), Sab4 (7), Sval (8), Shis (9), Styr (10) and Stryp (11), x= 0-2 & y= 0-2) have been synthesized, and the solid-state structures of, and have been determined. The compounds and are binuclear in which the Cu(II) centres have square-pyramidal geometry with apical sites occupied by aqua ligands. In and one axial site is occupied by water and the other by an oxygen atom of the carboxylate group from the adjacent dimer through oxygen atoms to form 1D helical polymer. Variable temperature magnetic measurements of the dimer and helical polymer showed that they are typical for moderately strong antiferromagnetic coupling. All the complexes show significant catalytic activity on the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol. The activity measured in terms of Kcat in the range 199-3800 h(-1) has been found to follow the order: 7>6>8>3>5 approximately 2 approximately 1>4 >10 >9 >11. The catalytic activity is found to increase with increasing the length of the methylene side chain of the amino acid in the reduced Schiff base ligands.

CoCo loco! Ligand‐bridged dimers (see picture) with the shortest known Co–Co interactions are the first amidinato and guanidinato cobalt(I) complexes. The nature of the interactions has been probed by magnetic and theoretical investigations, and has been shown to be multiconfigurational. Preliminary reactivity studies of the complexes have also been carried out.
