As the diversity of US citizens continues to increase, it is incumbent on the profession of nursing to provide adequate numbers of linguistically diverse nursing graduates to meet healthcare demands. Information in the nursing and educational literature provides evidence for instructional strategies that educators can use to develop teaching practices so they are better prepared to teach linguistically diverse nursing students.
Nursing programs should encourage faculty to build relationships with diverse nursing students not only because students appreciate them, but also because such relationships play a role in helping students overcome hindrances to success. [J Nurs Educ. 2017;56(7):389-396.].
This study embraces technology and compares two teaching strategies for the undergraduate-level nursing student: a taped digital media classroom lecture with YouTube video clips and a simulated unfolding case study experience in the nursing skills laboratory. The objective was to determine which method best promotes critical problem solving around clinical care issues related to Parkinson disease. Each stage of the case simulation shows a progression of disability with increased complexity of patient symptoms, which requires higher levels of nursing assessment. Eighty-four undergraduate students in a baccalaureate nursing program participated in this research study. Significant differences were identified in knowledge and in their ability to analyze complex information. Student outcomes were reported through the comparison of scores on a preexamination and postexamination using alternative style questions.
Telehealth and telehealth technologies have an increasing role in health care delivery as health care has continued to evolve to meet patient needs. Nursing education has been slow to integrate telehealth education and telehealth use in curriculum and clinical experiences. The purpose of the article is to provide information about the current state of telehealth and describe how telehealth education can be fostered and incorporated into nursing education. Incorporating telehealth education into existing nursing curriculum and clinical experiences ensures nurses recognize the utility of emerging telehealth technology and develop the skills needed to provide safe and competent care using telehealth.
