This paper presents development of a three-dimensional marine controlled-source electromagnetic (mCSEM) modeling algorithm and its application to a salt and reservoir model to examine detectability of mCSEM for a reservoir under complex subsurface structures. The algorithm is based on the finite difference method, and employs the secondary field formulation for an accurate and fast calculation of modeling responses. The algorithm is verified for a two-layer model by comparing solutions not only with analytic solutions but also with those from other 3D modeling algorithm. We calculate and analyze electric and magnetic fields and their normalized responses for a salt and reservoir model due to three sources located at boundaries between a salt, a reservoir, and background. Numbers and positions of resistive anomalies are informed by normalized responses for three sources, and types of resistive anomalies can be informed when there is a priori information about a salt by seismic exploration.
This study provides an analysis on results of neutron logging for various borehole environments through numerical simulation based on a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code developed and maintained by Los Alamos National Laboratory. MCNP is suitable for the simulation of neutron logging since the algorithm can simulate transport of nuclear particles in three-dimensional geometry. Rather than simulating a specific tool of a particular service company between many commercial neutron tools, we have constructed a generic thermal neutron tool characterizing commercial tools. This study makes calibration chart of the neutron logging tool for materials (e.g., limestone, sandstone and dolomite) with various porosities. Further, we provides correction charts for the generic neutron logging tool to analyze responses of the tool under various borehole conditions by considering brine-filled borehole fluid and void water, and presence of borehole fluid.
In this study, we make simulation of density log using a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) algorithm to make an analysis on density logging under different borehole environments, since density logging is affected by various borehole conditions like borehole size, density of borehole fluid, thickness and type of casing, and so on. MCNP algorithm has been widely used for simulation of problems of nuclear particle transportation. In the simulation, we consider the specific configuration of a tool (Robertson Geologging Co. Ltd) that Korea institute of geoscience and mineral resources (KIGAM) has used. In order to measure accurate bulk density of a formation, it is essential to make a calibration and correction chart for the tool under considerations. Through numerical simulation, this study makes calibration plot of the density tool in material with several known bulk densities and with boreholes of several different diameters. In order to make correction charts for the density logging, we simulate and analyze measurements of density logging under different borehole conditions by considering borehole size, density of borehole fluid, and presence of casing.
Polymer flooding for enhancing hydrocarbon production injects into a reservoir polymer solution that is viscous. It is very important to monitor the behavior pattern of the polymer solution in order to evaluate the effectiveness of polymer flooding. To monitor the distribution of polymer solution and thus fluid substitution within the reservoir, we first construct seismic and resistivity rock physics models (RPMs), which are functions of reservoir parameters such as rocks and type of fluid, fluid saturation. For the seismic and resistivity RPMs, responses of seismic and electromagnetic (EM) tomography are numerically simulated as polymer injection, using two dimensional (2D) staggered-grid finite difference elastic modeling and 2.5D finite element EM modeling algorithms, respectively. In constructing RPM for EM tomography, three different reservoir rocks are considered: clean-sand, dispersed shale-sand, and sand-shale lamination rocks. The polymer solution is assumed to have 2 wt% of polymer as normally generated, while water is freshwater or saltwater. Further, neutron logging is also considered to check its sensitivity to polymer flooding. The techniques discussed in the paper are important in monitoring not only hydrocarbon but also geothermal reservoirs.
This study makes an analysis on marine controlled-source electromagnetic method (mCSEM) responses for various petrophysical properties of sandstone reservoir. It is necessary to consider sensitivity of mCSEM data to petrophysical properties of the reservoir for valid interpretation of mCSEM field data. For computing reservoir resistivity that changes in accordance with reservoir porosity, water saturation and resistivity of formation water, we used Archie's equation which is widely used for formation evaluation of sandstone reservoir. We obtain and analyze not only amplitude of electric field but also its normalized amplitude by using a three-dimensional mCSEM modeling algorithm. Furthermore, we study on relations between operation frequency and buried depth of hydrocarbon reservoir. The relative difference in mCSEM responses for a sand reservoir is more than 70% when the water saturation increases from 0.2 to 0.5.
