Postpartum depression (PPD) among adult women is a prevalent and impairing problem, with evidence suggesting risk of adverse consequences for mothers and their infants. Few studies have investigated adolescent PPD; however, the increased risk of depression among girls compared with boys beginning in adolescence and the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy suggest increased attention is needed. An emerging body of research examines the psychopathology of adolescent PPD and addresses two questions: What is the prevalence and course of PPD among adolescents? What are the correlates and consequences of adolescent PPD? Additionally, this comprehensive review examines literature regarding this question: What prevention and intervention methods hold promise for adolescent PPD? Utilizing the framework of developmental psychopathology, recommendations for future research and clinical practice are provided.
