Das Buch bietet eine kritische Erorterung der friiheren Theorien iiber den Ursprung der Sprache und eine mit grossem Geschick vorgefiihrte neue Theorie.Der Verf. scheint in der allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft recht gut orientiert zu sein. Auf gewisse Mange1 werden wir weiter unten zu sprechen kommen; sie sind wohl nicht schlimmer als dass sie hie und da auch bei Sprachforschern vom Fach vorkommen konnen.In den Statuten der SociCtC de Linguistique de Paris ist die Erorterung des Utrsprungs der Sprache ausdriicklich untersagt. Anerkanntermassen geniigen die Methoden und Daten der Sprachwissenschaft nicht zur Losung dieses Problems; fur den Sprachforscher muss der Ursprung der menschlichen Sprache gewissermassen ausserhalb der Grenzen des miiglichen Wissens liegen. Immerhin kann dieses Thema wenigstens denjenigen Sprachforschern nicht gleichgiiltig sein, die es auch auf ihrem eigenen Gebiet als die hochste Aufgabe der Wissenschaft betrachten, vom Detail-und Einzelwissen z u m synthetischen uberblick fortzuschreiten. Fur eine Darstellung wie die vorliegende sollten die Sprachforscher deshalb dem Verfasser dankbar sein.Wie man sich auch zur Ursprungstheorie des Verf. stellen mag, ist die Darstelluiig und Kritik der friiheren Theorien unbedingt lehrreich und anregend. Allerdings kommt es dem Rezensenten vor als ob der Verf. in seiner Kritik manchmal iibers Ziel geschossen hatte.Der Verf. glaubt nicht dass sprachliche Ausdriicke sich haben aus spontanen Ausdruckslauten entwickeln konnen, und er beruft sich in diesem Zusammenhang auf eine Ausserung Honigswalds, zufolge der ,,der Satz von einer moglichen 'Entstehung' des Wortes aus dem Schrei solange ganzlich inhaltsleer und unbestimmt bleibt, bis man nachzuweisen versaumt wie ein Nichts am Sinn Sinn wird". Honigswald scheint iibersehen zu haben dass die Sauglinge schon wenige Monate nach der Geburt die Beobachtung machen, dass das laute Weinen die Anwesenheit der Pflegerin herbeiruft, und dass das Kindlein diesen Tatbestand riicksichts-10s ausnutzt. Herrn Professor RCvCsz scheinen diese und ahnliche Erscheinungen nicht entgangen zu sein, aber er verwehrt sich dagegen, ,,dass man hierbei der Ontogenese stillschweigend eine solche phylogenetische Bedeutung zuerkennt, die ihr ohne weitere Begriindung nicht zukommt"; und er fahrt fort: ,,Das kleine, noch sprachunfahige Kind ist schon von Natur aus sprachlirh disponiert, in ihm schlummern latente 118
