Plasmonic color filters inherently suffer from angular sensitiveness, which hinder them from practical applications. Here, we present a plasmonic subtractive color filter incorporating two-dimensional randomly distributed silver nanodisks on top of a glass substrate. Due to the elimination of structural periodicity, the proposed plasmonic color filter works via localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and thus enables excellent angle-insensitive (up to 60°) performance. In addition, uncoupled LSPRs between nanodisks guarantee stability and reproducibility of the color filter. Finally, a palette of colors across the visible region was obtained with the proposed color filters by simply varying the diameter of nanodisks, exhibiting a promising and robust applicability in digital imaging and sensing industries.
Navua sedge (Cyperus aromaticus (Ridley) Mattf. & Kukenth) is an invasive perennial sedge, native to tropical Africa, which is threatening many natural ecosystems and agroecosystems, especially in northern Queensland, Australia. Crop and pasture production have been impacted by Navua sedge and it is also directly causing reductions in dairy and beef production in affected regions. This review documents the biology, ecology and potential management options to minimise the spread and impact of Navua sedge. The weed reproduces both sexually (seeds) and vegetatively (via underground rhizomes). Its tiny seeds can be spread easily via wind, water, vehicles, farm machinery and animals, whilst the rhizomes assist with establishment of dense stands. The CLIMEX model (which uses distribution and climate data in native and novel ranges) indicates that in Australia, Navua sedge has the potential to spread further within Queensland and into the Northern Territory, New South Wales and Victoria. Several management strategies, including mechanical, chemical and agronomic methods, and their integration will have to be used to minimise agricultural production losses caused by Navua sedge, but most of these methods are currently either ineffective or uneconomical when used alone. Other management approaches, including biological control and mycoherbicides, are currently being explored. We conclude that a better understanding of the interaction of its physiological processes, ecological patterns and genetic diversity across a range of conditions found in the invaded and native habitats will help to contribute to and provide more effective integrated management approaches for Navua sedge.
The phenolics content and antioxidant activity of walnut (Juglans sigillata Dode) green husks were analysed during different stages of development. Contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids decreased from April 25th to June 7th, then increased during June and July, and decreased again at the beginning of August. Thirteen types of phenolic compounds were identified using HPLC of which juglone had the highest content. Because of seasonal variations, the trends of different phenolic compounds were different. Contents of both total phenolics and total flavonoids were strongly correlated with antioxidant activity; however, compared with totals, less significant correlations were observed between individual phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of storage temperature and time on nutrients, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities of walnut male inflorescences. The results showed that the moisture, saccharides, fat, protein, amino acids, ascorbic acid, phenolic and flavonoid compound contents, and antioxidant activities of walnut male inflorescences were markedly influenced by storage temperature, and different degrees of decrease in these parameters were observed during the entire storage period. Moreover, higher storage temperature had a more significant effect on the nutrients, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities of walnut male flowers, and the loss rate of these components at 25°C was higher than that determined at 4°C. However, the results also presented that the ash and mineral contents did not appear to be influenced significantly by the storage temperature, and slightly significant changes were observed in crude fiber throughout storage, which indicated that the influence of storage on the individual mineral and crude fiber content was minimal. Based on the findings in this study, in order to maximize nutrients concentration, walnut male inflorescences should be kept at 4°C for <6 days and be consumed as fresh as possible.
