In this thesis study, a framework offering people help and guidance for organizing their daily activities is proposed. This framework allows users to model their daily activities in the form of workflows. Due to the dynamic nature of pervasive environments, workflows are enabled to be adaptable at runtime according to context information collected in pervasive environments. A workflow engine is used for modeling and management of workflows and a separate rule engine with Complex Event Processing (CEP) capability is incorporated into the framework for both enhancing workflow adaptation and execution and for rule-based context reasoning. The adaptation model in the framework allows modeling activities in a hierarchical manner, from high level abstract activities to more detailed ones. Event-driven Architecture (EDA) is utilized for loosely coupled interaction between the workflow engine and the rule engine, allowing these engines, other context sources and userlevel applications to exchange data among each other. Since workflow engines are sufficiently complex, EDA allows incorporation of context information into the workflow models without modifying the workflow language. A higher automation level than the level supported by workflows is proposed by processing events in pervasive environments using CEP. A prototype implementation is developed and the framework is evaluated with some real life examples and experimental tests demonstrating its applicability.
This study proposes a set of new robust parallel hybrid metaheuristic algorithms based on Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) and Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) for the multi-dimensional numerical problems. The best practices of ABC and TLBO are implemented to provide robust algorithms on a distributed memory computation environment using MPI libraries. Island parallel versions of the proposed hybrid algorithm are observed to obtain much better results than those of sequential versions. Parallel pseudorandom number generators are used to provide diverse solution candidates to prevent stagnation into local optima. The performances of the proposed hybrid algorithms are compared with eight different metaheuristics algorithms of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE) variants, ABC variants, and Evolutionary Algorithm (EA). The empirical results show that the new hybrid parallel algorithms are scalable and the best performing algorithms when compared to the state-of-the-art metaheuristics.
In daily life, people have to perform a large number of activities typically in a limited amount of time. Thus, they may need help and guidance provided by support systems in order to accomplish these activities accurately and in the correct order. Accordingly, in this study, we propose a software framework based on workows and supported by a mobile application to assist users in pervasive environments for managing their personal activities. Pervasive computing enables to ease and automate the execution of the activities by integrating user's context into management of activities. Therefore, the framework augments user activities with context information, and gives a broader and a customized meaning to them, so provides advanced assistance by using sensors and devices in the environment, making web service calls, and utilizing mobile phone features. Moreover, the relationship between activities and context resources enable to automate user's tasks by dening rules within the framework. In parallel with this information, a prototype implementation is developed, and tested with scenarios from various domains. Consequently, applicability of these scenarios indicates workableness and feasibility of this framework in pervasive environments.
In this study, development boards containing electret microphone, light, temperature, motion, magnetic, optical and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) sensors are used for collecting data in a classroom. These data are published to the topics created for every sensor in the publish-subscribe type communication software. A complex event processing (CEP) engine listening to these topics analyzes the data by using predefined rule sets and infers high-level information such as "lecture delayed", "lecture started", "break given", and "lecture ended early". CEP engine also offers some guidance information such as "open the curtains", "turn on the air-conditioner", and "open the windows". The proposed system infers these by examining patterns, relationships and hierarchies within the data as well as applying time windowing, and then publishes these messages to the corresponding topics in the publish-subscibe messaging software. These messages are consumed by mobile phones and web sites for producing customized solutions to the end users.
