O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os conceitos de expansão marítima e império nas obras Os Lusíadas (1572), de Luís de Camões, e História da Província de Santa Cruz a que vulgarmente chamamos Brasil (1576), de Pero Magalhães de Gândavo. Camões defende que as viagens portuguesas às Índias projetaram Portugal como um novo império, uma Nova Roma, um império baseado no modelo romano, mas superior em conquistas e na língua. Gândavo, por sua vez, defende que a descoberta do Brasil projetou Portugal como um novo império na era moderna e, com isso, um novo modelo imperial a ser imitado e implementado, Nova Lusitânia.
