Among the inhibitor studied – o‐, m‐and p‐toluidines, acridine, phenazine and xanthine ‐ o‐toluidine and acridine have turned out to be excellent inhibitors of the corrosion of brass in nitric acid. As to the toluidine series the inhibiting power of the ortho isomer is superior to that of the para isomer. On the base of the results obtained the following order of efficiency may be established ‐ o‐toluidine ‐ p‐toluidine ‐ m‐toluidine ‐ acridine ‐ xanthine ‐ phenazine.
The efficiency is probably due to the elimination of nitrous acid (by diazotization) and to adsorption of onium type ions at a metal surface. NH2 groups give rise to an activation of all the positions in the cyclic molecule.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
