It is standard procedure for occupational therapists and physical therapists to assess musculoskeletal strength during evaluation. Dynamometric grip strength measurement is one objective measurement of total body strength. Normativc data for grip strength in older persons enables rehabilitation professionals to assess the severity of impairment or weakness in order to work toward a stronger, healthier state. Dynamotnetric grip strength norms for older persons, particularly those over 75 years, are based on small samples. Declines in strength occur with age. Given the prevalence of older persons within rehabilitation programs, occupational and physical thcrapists need increased knowledge about the abilities of older persons, including grip strength norms. This study used standard Jamar dynamometer procedures to study grip strength among healthy community-living elders and investigate the relationship between fitness and grip strength.
