Bright light appears to have a modest but measurable effect on sleep in this population, and ambient light may be preferable to stationary devices such as light boxes.
This multicomponent, nonpharmacological intervention conducted by trained research staff had no effect on nighttime sleep in this sample of nursing home patients. Enhanced nonpharmacological interventions should be developed and tested and combined with environmental interventions to mitigate noise when feasible. Adjunctive drug therapy may be needed to improve sleep in a substantial proportion of this population and should be tested in addition to nonpharmacological interventions in rigorous clinical trials.
Findings point out the complexity of aging in place in ALFs and the need for a coordinated effort by facilities, residents, and families in the management of resident decline. Findings further highlight the necessity of residents being well informed about both their own needs and the capacity of a facility to meet them.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
