RESUMO Trata-se de uma reflexão despertada pela participação da autora em uma Conferência Internacional sobre o Futuro dos Povos indígenas, organizada no ano 2000 pelo Centro de Estudos Beduínos da Universidade Ben-Gurion, em Beer Sheva, no Negev, em Israel. Múltiplos temas se entrelaçam, em breves pinceladas. A condição dos beduínos, pouco conhecida no Brasil, apresenta semelhanças com a de povos indígenas, no embate com Estados nacionais e exclusão em uma sociedade desigual. A autora aponta sua descoberta do poder da poesia oral beduína, em parte também escrita por protagonistas orais ou em versão árabe/inglês pelo estudioso Clinton Bailey. Nas entrelinhas, os sentimentos conflitantes de uma judia, neta de imigrantes de Odessa, fugitivos ainda do czarismo, educada com a utopia da defesa incondicional de todos os povos do mundo e da condenação de qualquer holocausto. Escrever sobre essa viagem é expressar, mesmo com décadas de atraso, a admiração pelos Beduínos e em especial por Ismael Abu-Saad, diretor do Centro, por seus livros, artigos e defesa dos direitos dos povos e excluídos, fundamentais para este ensaio.
